Many of us can appreciate Mr. Carlin's form of humor, including me. I have laughed til my sides hurt listening to him. He will be missed....

Unfortunately, on another note I must add....

As I have had to edit/delete a few posts from this thread due to the vulgarity used I'd like to remind everyone that we have filters in place for a reason and attempts to get around them are not acceptable. Yes, we all know that vulgarity is all around us in the media, books, music and etc. and while some parents allow their children to listen/read such stuff, not all do. Many parents try to protect their children and set a good example, which is what we try to do here at MG's. Please respect our policies. If you can't or won't, then this isn't the place for you.

Well said. I'd have to bet that Mr. Carlin is looking down and smiling at all the automatically generated ********** appearing on the internet in his behalf today.

We all loved him (for many many years) he brought to our attention everyday occurrences and seen them in a manner that brought humor to the situation. When I first heard him in the sixties along with cheech and chong they all crossed a boundary of humor that set standards for other comedians to follow, to push the limits of acceptable ponder, which made it all the more funny.
Though all the years I bought the records (33 1/3 RPM) all the television specials, all the club performances not one was for children. Just my observation ;)

    See ya soon George :wave

Well, he wasn't very young anymore, but you get my point. George Carlin made people laugh. The world will be a slightly darker place without him. But only for a moment. Then we'll start up his movies and remember his jokes, and we will laugh again, and as a result, the world will be a brighter place once more.

He left us with fun and laughter. Anyone who manages to do that lived a good life and managed not to waste it. Though it's sad that he's gone, that's something positive to remember.

Agreed, listened to him since I was a teen. His last standup was a bit confusing to me and not as funny, I wish he stopped on top 5-10 years ago, but you know what, he really could not do any wrong because he had the respect of most people. He might have had an agenda knowing the end was near. But, come on, the 7 dirty words? This guy DEFINED political incorrectness before being politically correct was thought of. People who say what is on our minds that most of us would not are always respected. RIP my man.

Side note to those posting in this thread
Sadly, its almost impossible to post any videos here from George. To do so would be like George doing stand up at an elementary school. We allow all ages. So, in this case I truly apologize, but most geeks can type in youtube.com and watch George all day. As a reminder, we are not prudes, we do not want to squash your first amendment (or Georges) but we DO want to allow for a safe environment for all ages. If you doubt it, ask me for my phone number, you can call me and listen to me swear like a truck driver, ask AbbySue, Calltalker, Chaslang, Corporal Punishment or anyone else who has talked to me. Thanks for your understanding.

Re: George Carlin dead at age 71

Few people among us can objectively be defined as (and be remembered as) truly “One of a kind.”

Surely George Carlin was one of them. While most successful comedic entertainers have commonly used “stand-up” comedy early-on in their careers; solely as a 'stepping stone' to other ventures, Mr. Carlin stayed with it his entire life - in the process nearly perfecting the art form, while always remaining relevant and on the cutting-edge.

After having won many awards and countless accolades throughout his career and for his life’s work; even in death George Carlin he earned another - becoming the world’s first posthumous John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts "Mark Twain Award" honoree.

As well as being an incredibly funny comedian he was also a master wordsmith. I remember the first time I saw the now legendary and brilliant comedian on our family’s very first color RCA television in the early to mid 1970’s. This TV appearance was fairly early in his career. It was my first exposure to any entertainer on TV (or anywhere else for that matter) who had such an incomparable ability to cleverly toy around with as well as melodically play with his words.

Of course, I cannot actually remember exactly the entire routine which he performed that night; although I believe it included something like: “Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?” However, the one thing I can most clearly recall about the skit was that this was the first time in my life that both my father and I literally laughed out loud - simultaneously, mind you - cackling uncontrollably at the television set, from the start of Carlin's act to the finish.

Unlike the many suit and tie 'badda-bing one-liner' types of comedians who were also performing during his earlier days; George was more of an observational comedian and story-weaver, who could easily stretch one tiny mundane idea or even a one-liner joke into a grand and hilariously interconnected narrative. He later became a counter-culture hero as well as a pioneering originator in creating many routines based upon what he referred to as 'sociopolitical attitude' comedy.

He was also very brave; constantly trying out never-before-tried ideas and skits that would never work for other stand-up comedians - then, or now. As an example; several years later, I saw George Carlin doing a routine whereupon he simply stood up on the stage for five to ten minutes moving back and fourth on the stage occasionally making faces and bringing the microphone up to his mouth but saying nothing at all. The audience roared. He could even make 'doing nothing at all' seem utterly hilarious!

The webpage link above leads to a quite lengthy very recent Q & A blogger interview with Mr. Carlin which was done by Jay Dixit who is a Senior Editor at Psychology Today. The interview actually occurred about 10 days ago (Friday, June 13th, 2008) and was originally slated to be background material for a far more brief 350-word Q&A to be placed on the back page of an upcoming issue of Psychology Today.

I could be wrong, but I believe this was his very last interview prior to his passing. In any case, what started out as a small question and answer interview; turned into truly one of the best and most moving as well as in-depth George Carlin interviews I’ve ever seen.

    Good Luck!

    MY NEXT LIFE
    By George Carlin

I want to live my next life backwards:

You start out dead and get that out of the way

Then you wake up in a nursing home feeling better every day.

Then you get kicked out for being too healthy.

Enjoy your retirement and collect your pension.

Then when you start work, you get a gold watch on your first day.

You work 40 years until you're too young to work.

You get ready for High School: drink alcohol, party, and you're generally promiscuous.

Then you go to primary school, you become a kid, you play, and you have no responsibilities.

Then you become a baby, and then...

You spend your last 9 months floating peacefully in

luxury, in Spa-like conditions - central heating, room service on tap, and then ...

You finish off as an orgasm.

    I rest my case

    RIP George Carlin

It is sad indeed. Luckily I have gotten to see him twice on stage. What made this news worse is that my mother called me up and asked me what I wanted for Christmas this year since the rents present to me was going to be tickets for his show in Jan.:cry

I agree with the Major's comment above entirely. A lot of times I never got what exactly he was getting at in some of his later "darker" and more cynical routines.

I was actually lucky enough to see him perform LIVE several times in my life and he could come off as downright disgusting and offensive to twits who came in with a coupon or something and knew little or nothing about Carlin beforehand. As in people who had only seen his softer performances on late-night TV or something like that. This was particularly true when I saw him performing in some of the smaller 'off-the-strip' venues in Vegas.

Most successful comics these says like say, Seinfeld (or lowbrow but successful comics such as "Larry the Cable Guy") spend all their time simply repetitively 'pleasing' their audience either on a sit-com, cable comedy hour or while performing stand-up routines. Whereas Carlin liked making them laugh - as well as think – and at the same time and he was never afraid or 'teasing' or offending his audience – especially in his later years.

In the end, believe Mr. Carlin had eventually come to view himself professionally as an 'essayist who performed his own material' rather than just another comic performer doing bland stand-up in an effort to simply delight their audiences over and over with set routines.

    Good Luck!

The last 'stand up' I saw Carlin do was the routine on the internet, I actually thought it was some of his better stuff :)
