I have a problem swallowing. In Dec. they put a balloon down my throat to open it up. Well, if worked for a number of months, but the issue returned. I scheduled another appointment for 2PM. Got a call confirming the appointment at 2PM!! Arrived at 2PM!! Short wait to the exam room.....waited,.....waited....waited....almost an HOUR.
Stepped into the hall and a nurse/staff member asked me if I needed help. I said I needed to reschedule for a time the doctor would actually see me. No appointments for 2 months. Another told me my appt was at 2:15....I reiterated the confirmation call for 2PM!! A third informed me he was about done and would see me next if I would wait a little longer.
He eventually came in and said: "I hear you are mad." "Do you want to leave?"
I said I wanted my throat fixed. He said: Have you not seen how busy I have been?" I said, "It sounds like your staff need to better schedule your time." He said: "I suggest you leave right now."
No apology for my hour long wait,
    Yes, I gladly left.

My brother has that symptom due to ALS.
Has to use a feeding tube and lives off 8 cans a day of Ensuure, and a pint of water with each can. Sometimes he can have some puree butterbeans or squash. Nobody deserves/ needs to be in that condition! Wish you all the best in finding a cause/ cure/ solution!

All offices here are private (except the VA, I believe, which is federal government). We do have med centers (or emergency clinics) that are private businesses people are buying into and I believe making a lot of money off of, but often they aren't as good.

Anyway, Tim...that is truly awful. There's nothing worse than offices with appointments that you show up for on time, and they have such little care for the patient's value of time. I'm also sorry to hear about your throat. My brother has that. Had multiple procedures like yours. He has Eosinophilic Esophagitis. I just texted him and heard back. His daughter also has it and her doc prescribed Flovent (swallowed...which is important). He went to his and told him he wanted the Flovent. Doc immediately said no for whatever reason. My bro said yes. Doc finally gave in and my brother has been free of it for about a year now. Worked great. If you have EOE, you might want to talk to a doc about Flovent.

I once waited with my mother for her eye doctor for 2 hours and 15 minutes because he was "running late".
Since it was about a 1 hour 20 minute drive from my home to hers, we sat and waited because I didn't want to go through the drive and a new appointment. I called my husband just so he knew we were not in an accident. I told him I had no idea when we'd be back.

My mother also had an intermittent swallowing problem. She had all kinds of studies done and no one ever came up with a solution. We could tell when it was coming on because she'd start to hiccup. If she walked around instead of sitting at the table, sometimes it would pass and she'd be able to eat.

Sad to hear the current state of medical care in this country. A retired OB-Gyn myself, I always scheduled a bit of free time each hour for little things that come up to crowd the schedule (like sudden baby delivery or C/Section). The horrible rate of current reimbursement by insurance companies has resulted in the overcrowding of doctors' schedules in order to make up for the rise in costs (salaries, malpractice insurance, rents, etc.). They have to see more patients in order to try to earn what they used to in prior times. It is no excuse, only a poor explanation of why the wait times have increased. National health care insurance would magnify the problem. I was lucky (able to retire 17 years ago) and did not have the problems doctors face today.
Sorry for your plight. All I can say is, try to find a doc who is not so busy and gives a shit.

Someone told me it is not unusual to wait that long for a "specialist". My comment was that it WAS unusual for a "specialist" to NOT come in and apologize for the extended wait. Working on an appointment with another Gastro group.

Thank you katkat...I complained to the Arkansas Medical board...who got back to me asking if I wanted to file a formal complain. I commented that being an asshole probably did not qualify as a reason for a formal complaint. :(

Might be interesting to see if the doctor has any reviews on these sites.
    healthgrades.com
    ratemds.com
    vitals.com
I have used the sites when I have been refereed to a doctor I know nothing about just to see what other people had to say. Don't hear the term "bedside manner" much anymore but it goes a long way to gaining a patients trust.

No...IIRC...it is a case of my upper sphincter not opening enough for all the food to go down. I end up coughing a lot of food up after every bite.

I call BS. I see a large number of specialists for various things, and I've never waited more than about 15 minutes past my appointment time before seeing a doctor. I've also never been taken to a room more than about 5 minutes after my appointment time. Definitely see a different one!

Actually, that's not true. I had to wait almost 30 minutes for an orthopedic surgeon once. He walked in the room apologizing, and explained his son was just in a car accident so he'd been on the phone with him.

I am working on that, if he doesn't use a "special" code on my records to indicate I am a PITA!! And yes, I have a very few that I had to wait on...but there were apologies and much attention from staff to keep me comfortable. This guy and his staff had a god complex.

I used healthgrades.ccom to check the 3 specialists I use regularly. Kidney, urological and digestive diseases. Found the reviews for each to be 50/50 +/-.
I feel all 3 are above average.

I did find that a digestive dr I started with had a larger percentage of negative reviews mostly about wait and staff attitude. But there were an abnormal amount of reviews. I wonder if there were phantom patients to balance out the averages. I am no longer ever a patient there.

Looks like a game of 'craps' using reviews!

I found negative reviews on him dating back to 2012 for the exact same reasons....but he was pretty much the only game in town. First visit, he wasn't very warm, but he got the job done.

Not sure about all the sites but to leave a review on healthglades you have to use a email address to signup and wait for them to send you a confirm email before you can post a review. It seems that might discourage someone from posting more than one review. Reviews are to be used as a guideline. Take them or leave them.

  23. Imandy Mann

    Imandy Mann MajorGeekolicious

I've only checked reviews after the fact to see how the responses compared to my experiences. All my dr.'s started by being assigned during emergency room admissions. If the first follow up was positive, I continued. If not, I looked elsewhere.

    Extracts from
I'm absolutely appalled that you were treated so badly. No excuse...given your condition and why you needed to have the complaint seen to, any idiot in that doctor's environment with half a brain should have been sensitive to your needs and regardless of how tense you (understandably) were, should have better been able to handle the situation and shown you a courtesy by politely and professionally handling the whole situation, calming you and made some sort of suitable arrangement.

Absolutely appalled that you were treated so badly and without consideration of your situation. I'm really sorry you had to put up with such idiots. I'd complain about their lack of professionalism and the manner they handled the whole situation given your condition (which would be worrying for anyone) and not being able to diffuse tempers while coming to a satisfactory solution for you. Pathetic unprofessional lot of sods!

Tim sometimes you just need to laugh so here is a little health care humor for you.

    Bubba had shingles.
Those of us who spend much time in a doctor's office should appreciate this! Doesn't it seem more and more that physicians are running their practices like an assembly line?
    Here's what happened to Bubba:
Bubba walked into a doctor's office and the receptionist asked him what he had. Bubba said: 'Shingles.' So she wrote down his name, address, medical insurance number and told him to have a seat.
Fifteen minutes later a nurse's aide came out and asked Bubba what he had.
Bubba said, 'Shingles' So she wrote down his height, weight, a complete medical history and told Bubba to wait in the examining room.
A half hour later a nurse came in and asked Bubba what he had. Bubba said, 'Shingles..' So the nurse gave Bubba a blood test, took his blood pressure, an did an electrocardiogram, and told Bubba to get undressed and put on the gown, and wait for the doctor.
An hour later the doctor came in and found Bubba sitting patiently on the exam table in a gown and asked Bubba what he had. Bubba said, 'Shingles.' The doctor asked, 'Where?'
Bubba said, 'Outside on the truck. Where do you want me to unload 'em??'
AND THIS IS WHY OUR HEALTH CARE COSTS ARE SO HIGH!!!

Well, it may be a blessing in disguise. The new gastro group are great. They are going way further than the egotistical prick with a God complex did. Having additional tests to video the workings of the upper sphincter as I eat different foods and will probably have to go to Little Rock for a specialist who may cut the muscle. No one local does this kind of surgery.

Good luck Tim glad you found someone who is willing to go that extra mile, As for my gastro doc you have to wait sometimes hours. but you call in before your appt and the answering machine will let you know if the dr is running late and for how long, and if its over an hour then you don't need to go in right away, so less waiting in the office. which is great.

This may of not been my longest wait in a doctor's office but it ranks high on the rememberable scale. I was scheduled as the last appointment before lunch. I had been in exam room waiting for the doctor for over 20 minutes when I realized there was dead silence in the hall. It seems the doctor got called to the hospital for an emergency. The staff forgot to tell me this and also forgot I was even in the exam room because they closed the office and all went to lunch. WHAT?? We all know there is not much to entertain yourself with in an exam room. I could of got dressed and left but decided to wait. About a hour later several of the staff came to apologize and say over and over how sorry they were. Yes it never should of happen. Then the doctor came and repeatedly apologized. Yes I was a little putout and inconvienced but thankful I had not been the last appointment for the day and been forgotten. Yikes! Then I realized the best part of the story was the doctor saved a life at the hospital that day.

Hey....well, for an update....found a better gastro clinic. Had a second swallow test and I seem to have not one, but two problems. The new one and it shows the ligament in my throat that is supposed to invert when I swallow ( to keep food from going down into my lungs ) does not invert completely. So, not much to do for that other than a speech therapist to practice exercises to strengthen the muscles that control that flat. And next is a new test by the ONLY Dr. in the state that does these, to look at the motility of my upper esophagus sphincter ..to see if it actually contracts to push the food down the tube. So...hurry up and wait....again. ( BTW, the shitty Dr. has not sent my records to the new clinic....I may have to threaten a lawsuit!! )

    Thanks for asking!! :)
