Getting data off of a reluctant hard drive

I have a fairly new drive (about a month old) that's acting like it's about to drop dead. It comes up in My Computer and all the data is visible when you open it. You can surf the folders and while it's slow everything is there. Then if you try actually opening any files, the computer takes forever to open files and then the files may crash or not. I tried copying the data to another drive (2 different ones) and it can't read the source disk or throws an I/O error. I tried burning some of it to a DVD and get a similar error.

I can live without about 95% of the data if need be, but some of the pictures from this past weekend would be a PITA to replace since they aren't on my backup from a week ago.

    Greetings, waylandcool...

I run into this situation a lot with older machines, so I use a Linux Mint disk to transfer files to a flash drive...

Download an image from here, burn it to a CD or DVD, and boot to the disk...you should be able to see all files on any local drives, and transfer any to a flash drive...

    Good luck...

I am having success using Roadkil's Unstoppable copier to move the files to a good drive. It's taking awhile to move all 300 GB but the files are moving.

Ah! That's a neat little program, isn't it? It's also good for recovering data from scratched cd/dvd media...

Good job - glad you got it...
