Quite often when you check out who is on-line you see, say, 3 members and 35 guests. How do we get the guests to sign up. I am usually on-line when most of you lot are asleep which accounts for the low members numbers but I can't explain the high number of guests unless they are from UK, OZ or some other radically different time zone to the US of A. Any ideas as to why the high ratio of members : guests and how we get them on board. Bazza

Our board sometimes gets upward of 300 guests at a time. Some of them are people who are members, but who aren't logged in. But a lot of them are people who don't like message boards, but still browse the tech forums for help or to keep their finger on the pulse of what people are talking about. Occasionally, they'll see something posted they simply MUST respond to, so they register and start posting.

My mistake, misread my clocks. 6.30am in Eastern OZ is 1.30pm the day before on the West Coast of USA, is that right. Most of you guys must be at work, not asleep ( or maybe I was right, asleep at work;) ). Question still stand though. How do we get them to join. Bazza

I think the guests are routed to the forum list while waiting for their downloads from the main page. At least I think thats how Tim used to have things setup. Umm..... I really need to take a lunch break lol.

Thanks Sgt T. I haven't seen numbers as high as 300 but maybe where we have the little MG sayings like "Geek it till it hertz" and things like that we should plug "the friendly message board", "the friendly helping hand", etc. Maybe lots of guests have been burnt by flaming from other boards but most MG replies are friendly and helpful. Just a thought. Bazza

Hot damn, just made Sergeant (400). Finally a rank that befits my height. Zone Alarm is going mad with alerts today. Anyone reading this post without Zone Alarm or other equivalent installed on your PC is asking for trouble. Yes, I do know how to turn the alert notification off, BTW. Get ZA free from MG. i could be wrong but i think this relates mostly to people doing searches for common spyware, viruses, and other computer related problems in Google or Yahoo search engines... i know that's how i found this site... there are probably a crap load of people searching for "Cool Web Search removal" or "Only The Best Popups" and getting directed to majorgeeks threads on the issue, hence making them non-registered guests =]

Currently 29 members and 246 guests online. Busy day. :)

At any popular site, guests usually outnumber members by a pretty good margin. Lots of folk don't WANT to join, they're just looking for an answer to a problem, and lots don't trust joining for fear that giving out their email address will get them further buried in spam.

GT, Obviously you are seeing the overall number of guests and members and I am only seeing the number that are visiting the particular forum that I am on. Lounge (off topic), Software, etc. Is that how it works? Any way us plebs can see the overall numbers as well as the numbers for the forum we are on. Maybe both sets of figures could be displayed where only 1 appears now. If you want to reveal that info, of course. Bazza

Total number of members and guests on the site is on the main forums page, first section under "What's going on?".

Why hide your light under a bushel? Publish both sets of numbers on every forum. Baz

It's a default setting, they'd have to do a hack to get it on all the pages. I don't work here, but at the site where I do work, we found it wasn't worth the hassle. :)

I work at a large board and I tend to agree with you. Our numbers are similar 68 registered and 205 guests. We've thrown ideas around several times but they just don't want to sign up even though we have a friendly and helpful atmosphere just like here.

Do we have to wear togas ALL the time? I always trip over the hem getting out of the swimming pool. Embarrassing.

Make Sgt. Tibbs the keeper of the recipes. I've seen her work on other sites. She's a walking cookbook.

The Talibong only drink mararitas when eating Muslim tacos. Other than that,, it's straight Cuervo Gold,, Jack Daniels, and good American beer.

Lord,, I have become a member of a LOT of strange organizations since finding out we had a strong Southwest Geek Force here,, ;)

  33. dperino

    dperino Capt. Caveman

No minerals, no fruit salad. Just toss it back,, and take a sip of beer. That's the talibong way. (I think)

You're off the hook Goldfish. :D

Interresting. Just installed Firefox (seems to be the Talibong thing to do) and the cursor tends to hang if you hit the spacebar right at the end of a line while posting.

Works for me! And shoot....if women can't cook, then I'm all set, I just have to provide recipes.

Lean Cuisine...bite me. Those are FOUL! :p Tonight for dinner I did a roast chicken stuffed with hazelnut stuffing, roasted baby red potatoes with garlic and parsley, macaroni salad, and cheese-chive bread, with chunk-cut watermelon for dessert.

You're right, though, xflat...us wimmens can't find the stove with both hands and a flashlight. ;)
