Getting Past "Access Denied" in XP Repair Prompt

I'm wondering if there is any way to copy files or folders from the C drive using the Windows XP Home disk's repair prompt mode without receiving a denial of access. What happened was while in the process of trying to remove a virus, I accidently deleted something associated with windowslogon.exe. Now I'm unable to get on Windows in any way. I plan to reformat my computer to fix the problem, but I want to copy several folders from my C drive to my D partition so I do not loose them. Is there a way to gain access to the content on the C drive, specifically My Documents, using the XP disk's repair mode, or perhaps another way of copying files from C to D? Or even a way to repair windowslogon.exe without clearing my hard drive?

Okay, I had this problem once...while installing SP2, the setup froze and I had access problems. I don't know if there's an easier way (and, knowing me, there probably is...), but I installed Windows XP on the D drive, booted from THAT copy of XP, copied necessary files over from C, reformatted C, copied necessary files over from D, and then formatted D to get rid of the second copy of Windows...

That may be the long exhaustive way to do things...but it worked for me...:)

How far into the boot process do you get?

I get to the blue "windows is loading" screen and at that point a referenced memory error message comes up concerning winlogon.exe. If you click OK the computer then reboots and continues the loop.

Have you tried to boot to safe mode?, or last known good?

I wrote this tutorial some time ago. The fact that you cannot boot makes it almost worthless, however.

Booting in safe mode make no difference. Right before you get to the desktop the same error message appears.

At this point I would go with corndog's idea (#2), unless someone else has any ideas?

Try changing your computer to boot to your windows xp setup disc, it will ask you if you want to repair the files, do that before you reformat.

He says he receives a "denial of access in Repair".

That may be what he said, but he meant in recovery console.

I know what RawLo meant, but Repair means Repair to me.

    Anyway, this isn't helping Kerensky.

Kerensky, if none of the suggestions above help and you are still intending on a format as you said but want to save certain files, you may be able to copy files by using the COPY command in the Recovery Console.

The command FIXBOOT may also help fix the problem.

If you are unsure of the commands, type help for the list.

We have been over this. He already knows of the limitations of recovery console, and will be unable to do much of anything to save his data through it, if he could not remove the restrictions before the crash.

The fact that the problem happens just before he logs in means that the bootsector is not at fault. He would not see the splash screen at all if the bootsector was bad, as the splash screen loads after the bootsector has passed.

Now Kerensky, if you can, you can make one of these nifty Windows PE-like CDs and copy everything just fine:

I still think that you should try replacing the registry.

Can you post what the EXACT error, verbatim is?

At the blue windows is logging on screen, this error message appears.

    winlogon.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x77f5234c" referenced memory at "0x0070803c". Memory could not be "written".
    Click OK to terminate.

And at that point you're left with no other option than to click OK and the computer reboots.

Ok I did step one from the link, however, when I try to get onto windows, I receive an error message concerning lsass.exe. It says that the administrator password is not right or something to that affect. It was a poorly worded message. Also now when I try to get into the repair console it asks for the administrator password. I press enter because I never created a password, but it does not work. So I'm wondering is there some sort of default password to get past this.
