    Assuming You're using XP...

just remove the icon from the desktop. IE itself can't be removed without causing a heap of problems. Besides, you'll need it for Windows Update unless you use Automatic Updates

sorry i sort have forgot to mention what i am running. you are right, Windows XP service pack 2, all up to date at the moment. i do have it set on auto update. i'm assuming it will still auto update even though i have firefox as my default. i don't see why it wouldn't

thanks for the quick repsonse. it's much appreciated

yes, it will still auto-update as that service is a background service.

excellent. thanks for the help. is it really that much of a hassle to rid of IE?

It would cause you more headache's than you want to endure. Just remove the icon from the desktop and pretend it doesn't exist;)

Third-party programs use the IE browsing engine to display things because it save them the hassle of writing their own display code. Removing IE from Windows would break countless applications.

    If I may butt in...

Here's another way to get it "out of sight, out of mind..."

    Goto "Add/Remove Programs"
Click on the "Add/Remove Windows Components" button (or icon)
    Then, Uncheck "Internet Explorer"
While you're there, you may want to choose to uninstall these if you don't use 'em...
"Indexing Service" (If you don't use your XP search function alot, then get rid of the indexing. It just slows things down a bit from what I understand.)
"MSN Explorer" (If you don't use MSN Explorer to access the internet...)
"Windows Messanger" (If you don't use MSN messanger...)

And/or anything else you don't want...

I hope this helps out a little more.

Actually... I'd like to add another method of "out of sight, out of mind"...

Goto the same "Add/Remove Programs" and click on "Set Program Access and Defaults". Then, click the "Custom" radial, and set up your IE preferences in there!

That method from add/remove will not remove internet explorer, just hides it.It is not just 3rd party but windows itself is ie depended.

That's why I called it an "out of sight, out of mind" solution. ;)

deleting the icon from the desktop does the same thing. the add/remove was a perception based feature.. I just love it when people repeat solutions over and over in a thread.

Another thought about removing IE. I much prefer FF too, but from time to time have had little probs with it and resort to IE for resolution. It is definately a good backup browser IMO. I would just ignore the desktop icon and continue with FF.

i never had the icon on the desktop to begin with. i'm in this whole "if i;m not using, no sense in having thing." i like a fairly clean and bare bones setup. i'm weird like that. just the essentials

So how do you go from Internet Explorer 7 Beta back to IE6?

Considering IE7 Beta 1 was sent to beta testers only and you're posting here and not on the beta testers forum, I'd say that you're out of luck on that one.

Now, now, Kodo. We can still help.

    Format and reinstall. :)

I've seen this practice here many times.

Hmmm, it is beta. Perhaps you should post in the microsoft beta forums about this issue. Otherwise, perhaps re-installing XP sp2 may fix this issue.

On a side note, I love when people complain on how a certain software application doesn't work or is corrupting their system. Then finding out they are using alpha/beta software. I just wonder how some people can think that this software is totally stable. I guess they are download and install phreaks.

demonspeedng22:Try the add/remove with updates ticked.Internet explorer updates are usually there.
