My co-worker has just gotten a new computer. It has a 90 trial period for McAfee that she does not want or need. I have been trying to find a way to remove it from her computer but cannot find a way to do it. It does not show up in Add 0r Remove Programs nor does it have an Uninstall file in the Programs menu.

I need some help here - appreciate your time and trouble!!

There is not a McAfee Uninstall listed in Add/Remove?

No. There is nothing at all about McAfee.

OK. Which version is it and is it just VirusScan?

Version 2005. It has the whole program including Virus Scan & Spam Killer.

You can try that but I doubt you would get it all.

Look in Program Files for the Mcafee folder and see if there is a unins000.exe, if there is click on it and see if it starts the uninstall process.

you might have to setup your mcafee (if you already haven't), before you are able to remove it. my newer computer, had mcafee or symantec, and i ran into the same problem, but i figured it out.

No such file in McAfee. What do you think of

Did you check what sosaman suggested? That might be an option for you, go thru the install process then uninstall thru Add/Remove.

No such file in McAfee. What do you think of sosaman's idea of installing and then uninstalling it. I had thought about doing that but I was trying to avoid having unnessary files left behind.

There is an app here called Your Uninstaller! 2006, which has a 21 day free trial, it is Brilliant and brings up numerous apps that aren't in the normal Add/Remove Programs listing and it will scrub the registry for you. Try this and use the Pro option, there is also an Advanced Uninstall option for some of the apps that seem to hide from the normal processes. Try it out, I love this app.

Tell me how you get on.

Well, I downloaded it and tried to find McAfee and it was nowhere to be found. Maybe I just need to install it and then see what I can do to get rid of it.

Thats a pain, right firstly goto the website and search for uninstall Mcaffe (product, e.g AV) and (year) and they should have uninstallation instructions.

Second do a "Search" and "find' via the start menu and locate where any and all the program files are then you may have to reinstall and then uninstall using suggested program. Had similar issue tonight on another sys (not PC1, 2 or 3 (well 3 doesn't need AV as it has its own unique protection features, lol)) to remove Norton AV and that app ripped all the crap out plus the obnoxious registry entries.

But first Web, then find then remove that pile of crud.

    Replacement recommendations:
    AVG (free)
NOD32 (new you beaut with very small footprint) but need to go here for proper set-up, but keep all deletion as manual, i.e. prompt me for:

Good Luck and keep me posted

If you install it the uninstaller should show up in the Add/Remove. You might get more of it that way.

I finally installed it and then did the only thing left and that was to go to c:/programs/mcafee and delete everything I could in those folders. Only two files couldn't be deleted. So far everything seems to be working fine.

    Thanks for all your help!!

Thats a very coarse and aggresive approach obviously done out of extreme frustration. You just hope there were no important shared files but you obviously still have some remnants. If you use Your Uninstaller! 2006 you can click and drag files/folders/etc into it's bin to remove from your sys.

    GrreatRon Sergeant

Well, everything I deleted is in the Recycle Bin for now. Does that differ from the bin of Your Installer?

  21. Bold Eagle

    Bold Eagle MajorGeek

Yes I believe it would be but can't be certain it would certainly remove it for you but the purpose of the bin is to drag start up icons into it and it will root out the rest, I believe, reg entries etc. Wasn't intend to insult w earlier comment but it can cause later sys problems doing it that way, just my 2c.

Hey I just realised that if you right click on files you will also have the option to send to your uninstaller! 2006, which will be the most thorough way of removing apps/programs from your sys.
