Check the sticker on the pumps from Weights and Measures to see when the last time the pumps were calibrated. You might not be getting all the gas your being charged for.
Here in Armpit (being an oil town) there were 24 stations distributing contaminated gas. One woman had to replace her fuel pump twice. For reasons unknown the news will not reveal the 24 stations, guess you take your chances, buyer beware, bull:crap.
They claim they don't know what the contaminate is but are reimbursing people who have their cars damaged, more bull:crap.
I would think they should at least close those 24 stations until the problem is resolved.
Anyway, check the pumps you use. As for the contamination it could be local refineries.

Hmmm... wonder how difficult it would be to develop a cheap fuel octane/purity tester. The only products I've seen of the sort run in the 5 digit range for price.

I did not know there was such a thing, of course the cost would be beyond affordable for the average consumer.

Wow Darlene a great question and one I have no answer too but would like to find out, may have to do some emailing of gov folk I know who may know in the UK the answer on this.... legally I would suspect they would have to be regulated, but how often is the question.

I also still want to know in the UK at least ( dunno in the USA ) but why do we pay xxx.9 of a pence for a liter of fuel, there is AFAIK no such monetry value as .9 of a pence ( so would be like .9 of a cent in USA ), the fuel companies cannot blame old machinery as many pumps are now new digital ones.... always wanted to know the answer on this ficticious value, if anyone knows, would love to hear the answer.

Halo, I suppose a person could take a gallon (or whatever your measure is) to the station and see if you actually get the amount your paying for.
On the other hand with all the new homeland security laws perhaps you can't even fill that small of a container any more.

Yes good idea, an accurate measured container would be fine, and in UK dont think off hand we have any spare fuel containers banned as yet.

Also a thought, fuel has additives these days to clean or help clean engine so in theory your not actually getting a gallon of petroleum, likey just under!?

All I know is its starting to get more and more expensive and will not stop rising in cost, in part due to the imerging countries like China who are car mad and fuel hungry, which is why in part I changed my car last year to a more frugal one, in which I only really for normal travel need to fill up once a month £45 opposed to my last car which drank like a fish! and I generally spent £100 a month.

As long as people are required to do yardwork there will be small containers. Count on it.

I'm assuming someone requested the pumps be calibrated, it was shown being done on the news. They said to check the sticker to see if it is up to date. I never new about any sticker. Although I do check elevators. :)
I never see people getting gas cans filled, maybe because there are so many lawn service people here and it so inexpensive.

In Louisiana we our scales and pumps are regulated. They calibrate the scales and the pumps. Course most of our politicians get indited or get away with corruption or theft.:D
