I am new to MajorGeeks so I thought I would introduce myself and maybe find out more about you all. I am in Idaho, but I am not an Aryan. I eat steak and potatoes and drive a pickup truck, usually not at the same time. I support my troops and pay my taxes. I like parrots and Social Distortion. Under my desk I have Windows XP, Red Hat Enterprise and OSX on one switch box. After reading my mail I can tell you where to find the best mortgage, Viagra, porn ohh and apparently I won a prize somewhere. I managed to get my wife hooked on the biker build offs and American Chopper on TV so I figure it’s just a matter of time before I get that Harley. I like solving problems and moving on…so I hate repetition. I have ADD and tattoos but still managed to learn to write a little code. I currently manage a help desk at a local University so I am not in it for the money:) Ohh yeah, I can be sarcastic sometimes too. I love to help out when I can and I am grateful for help that I receive. I hope this tells you about me. What about you?

Welcome micr0dv8. Sorry I am not one for much typing tonight, but I can tell you I am one tired, over worked lady. Guess your going to have to observe me for a while if you want to know anything about me. Summer is my busy season, so I will be dead on my butt for the next few months.

Welcome micr0dv8, Im new here too, and so far everyone seems pretty cool. Not much to say about me really, just that I am a recent graduate of Web Design and Developement, I have done a few websites and many graphics. I found this site and thought it would be a great place to learn a few things and make some friends. Also, I am a female, and old enough to know better yet young enough not to care. Oh and I have a warped sense of humour, so beware!!

Hey, how's it goin'. I'm from IN and I drive a pick-up too. I run hardening furnaces for a Fortune 500 company. I have a slight dyslexia problem so I'm giving you the high-five for not letting anything hold you back. I had a parrot once. He wouldn't shut up, so I put him in the freezer. When I took him out, he looked at me and said "Just tell me what I have to do so I don't end up like that chicken in there.":D

Me, I'm an NZ expatriate, married forever, 2 teens (one of each), 2 ancient cats, one Shepherd/ Boxer dog, 42 million rabbits out back working their way through all living vegetation, I like tacos and would probably like cannollis but the local mafia won't send me one, so I am an undecided in that area. I am a fibre artist and an almost-real estate agent. I like to annoy the big guys here. I don't know zip about programming but am learning a lot about all the things my pc can and can't do thanks to the fine folk here.

cor ive touched some nerves so let me explain myself. american spelling is far more phonetic than 'english'. i had 'learnt' how to read and write WELL by the time i was 6 yrs old. i then moved to england and suddenly it was all 'wrong'. i went to the sort of english schools where spelling was a big deal. (unlike a lot of places today) i think that over dicsipline, natural rebellion, and AND a difficulty with learning new languages have all played a part. (something to do with the side of your brain that works best - in my case maths and such) i was not 'blaming' america, just the fact that i was set up for failier at this subject at a very early age. aloha. ps after writing the last post it occured to me 'why cant i have spell check in the tool bar ALL the time'. i did post the question but it was bumped to softwear where the questions appear to be much more technical than that.....so humour me......is there a way of keeping spell check in the tool bar perminately?

Actually I have a daughter that has just been diagnosed with NLD which is a non-verbal learning disorder. I just found out about it a few months ago. Boy, I tell you, it sure changes your attitude when it's your little girl who struggles. I am trying to totally revamp my lifestyle because of it.

But you know, I think that those of us who start at the bottom and work for every thing we get earn much more than knowledge along the way. Someone once told me "Experience is the best teacher, it gives the test before the lesson."

sorry abby sue, didnt mean to sound disrespectfull, but by and large the simpler questions seem to be ignored on the software site. in addition there are meny more queries on there so mine get lost on page three or somesuch by the time i get round to checking. i realise im not the only one new to the computer world, but i feel more comfortable posting these very basic questions among those that are rather more lighthearted. in future i will make sure i play the game according to the rules. much aloha. ps. i have read the guide at the top of the page. i do 'search' for the answers before i advertise my ignorance. not just on MG but on the so called help topics in both the computer and on MS. a lot of the time because my phrasing is not in computer speak, i get nowhere.

micro my son has written dyslexia, dyslexia isnt even a recognised learning disorder in this state. i agree though that the harder you struggle the more you learn. i dont think im dyslexic, but i nevertheless struggled in school. i escaped at 15. i ended up joining the open university when i was 23 in some sort of effort to prove that i was not simply a 'dumb blond'. i aced every exam. ditto when i did my psych training. theres a moral to that story somewhere.

Hi Micr0dv8, I have just started to come back around here - but I can honestly say it's a great place. I live in Texas, grew up near Syracuse, NY. I've been in the Navy, hitch-hiked all over the Eastern & Midwestern US (back when it was still safe to do it), had a few different careers (Machinist, Laboratory Technician, Warehouse Manager, Accounting Supervisor, Animal Control Officer, Operations Manager for a pager company, etc...) well...maybe more than a FEW careers! ;) Needless to say, I'm kinda old (in years anyway) but feel young - well, on most days! ;) There's a song that I can't recall at the moment that says something about growing old is only going back to where you're from...(it may be by Kansas..not sure ATM) but that's kind of how I feel. Life is all about learning & living with change as far as I'm concerned (Oh - this is probably due to my having ADD also!) Glad you are here!

thank you so much for your kind reply abbey sue. your right, i dont always remember to post my system specs with my queries, i shall remember to do so in the future. i am sure some of this is simply my own embarrassment at being so nieve about how computers work at the grand old age of 48. still im doing it now and thats what counts. the more i play with the puter the more comfortable i will become and eventually, (you never know) i might be the one answering these questions.

im glad you were able to find help and support for your childs learning difficulties. i have researched the subject a great deal. my eldest daughter was a special ed teacher so she was also able to direct my research and options. as the little sod reads like an adult, has a large vocablurary, is vocal and articulate, it is extreamly difficult to get any authority, inc school, to accept that reading and writing do not necassarily follow on from each other. there are ploys to make his writing experiences easier and he is slowly putting them into operation. unfortunately, by this time -hes 12- he is also caught up in avoidence mechanisms that are even harder to work around. he will be fine though. hes sharp enough, sassy enough, and life experienced enough to know how to achieve his paticular goals. its me thats gonna end up with the nervous breakdown!

    thank again. much aloha. laurie.

Whoa!! I am there right now. I am learning how to say things so that she understands what I mean.

This is a rant by the way.

I am divorced and I have contacted the shool several times and asked to be notified when they were having parent teacher conferences etc. I gave them my email, phone etc. Finally after years of putting up with it I said to heck with it I am going to shake the tree so to speak. I did and after threatening to contact the aclu they have been more than helpful. I went to the parent teachers conference and they show me this paper and say this is her ability and then she starts moving on we have been ....

I was like wait! What is this .. this is an IQ score right? She looks surpised and says yes. We usually don't tell parents that. I said "WHAT?!?!" Apparently they don't want you to know you child has a problem? Anyway, since then my ex and I have talked and sent her to a neuropsychologist for brain mapping and thus found her problem.

Now we are finding out how to best communicate with her. I recently found out that we are supposed to be getting these pamphlets that tell us our rights etc. I met a teacher here where I live who told me that she drives the students in her class to see these specialists and that the school pays for the testing. My daughters school did nothing and said nothing when I told them I was going to get her tested. I figure by Aug or sept. I should be cooled down enough to go talk with them reasonably.

    /rant
