ghost copy new hard drive on a laptop

I bought a new hard drive for my Sony Vaio laptop and would like to copy my old hard drive to my new drive. Can I remove the CD/DVD module and run my new hard drive from this IDE port? Or can I buy a cable and run both hard drives off of the existing hard drive port? I'd rather not spend $50 for a ghost program if I don't have to - which I'd use to make a DVD of my existing drive. Any suggestions? Thanks

that's a relatively cheap external enclosure, and you can even use that to recycle your old hard drive. It runs off of usb power, so you dont' even need a power supply for it. with that, you can use your desktop or another computer to create the ghost image, then swap the drive from the enclosure, and finally write the ghost image.

then of course, that's my only idea so far... i'm not in a thinking mood right now:-/

 

do they both have LAN ports? you may be able to just buy a 5-6$ ethernet cable

does the enclusure support all eide drives? Say perhaps an old 6GB ATA33 hd? I know that the height shouldnt be more than 9.5mm. Also, would I be able to boot from USB drive like a CD-ROM for example.

 

unfortunately, it will only support laptop drives, but it's incredibly reliable
