I was wondering why we are not allowed GIF avatars.I like the GIF one's better then still pictures .And trying to figure out why we are only allowed 50kb for size on a picture.Seems a bit small.

We had them a couple of years ago.And then the website changed. No longer allowing GIF.

    GIF avatars are allowed.
But you'll only see the animation when you click on the member's name or avatar.

True but it does not work on the main page.So it's kinda point less to have a GIF on your profile page.Because most people don't view the profile page.

Animated (flashing) GIF avatars are distracting.
This is tech support forum, not a social networking site...

Odd. I find these avatars too big. The file upload size may be smaller but they render larger on the page than when our forum was at vbulletin. Just curious...Why would you need a larger file for an avatar?

As far as gif avatars...3rd party extensions are required on this forum software to have them which the owners here will not use because they can lead security vulnerabilities for the forum. On a personal note, I agree with Eldon. They are distracting...and not in a good way.

The thing I miss are better emojis. The ones that come with the software are horrible.

Gifs are old and outdated today as png overtakes it in both software security, and superior compression.
Most internet content today is viewed from mobile devices such as your smart phone
When you have a blog or forum content site with many GIFs loading at the same time (one after the other), the difference in bandwidth usage can add up dramatically.
This slows the whole show down and interferes with a servers ability to deliver premium performance.

In todays world where users are increasingly shifting towards mobile devices with limited bandwidth, making them download almost 10 times the volume of content for no good reason, would be senseless just because we want animation!

Many social media sites today will not allow gifs.......Facebook, Twitter and the likes.
They wont go as far as to admit why, but rest assured that the above reasons are a likely motivation!

Dont be lazy LR, google loves emoji's Lol.

I agree. On some forums where people choose to put up animated avatars, I block the image because it is annoying.
