GIF file size

I have some GIF files that I want to use as avatars, but there's a size limit. Is there a way to get a 40k .GIF file down to under 7k? What about a 20k? An 8k? Basically, is there a way to shave the files down?

Are they animated? If not, you can use any photo editing software like PhotoFiltre or XnView and compress them. I compress 2MB pics down to under 50KB with them

If you can reduce the colour palette you can greatly reduce a gif file size. Many gifs only use 8 or 16 colours but are stored as 256 or more. Paint shop Pro can reduce them easily.

 

Thanx for the tips... I'll look into it. I had a couple that were animated, but I screwed 'em up somehow and now they're not animated anymore... no biggie.
