Okay, so I upgraded a Gigabyte MB, a GA-8IDML, which I had been using a 1.8Mhz processor on for some time to a 2.6. All was fine, but it kept freezing every so often and I had ot reboot. Now it freezes about every twenty minutes, sometimes after only 2 mins.

The processor is a SL6W5, 400fsb/2.6/128cache/celeron. I have flashed the chip in the bios, installed every driver etc I can think of to stop the problem. Nothing works. I am running really low on ideas and I am about to bin the processor. If anyone has any ideas, please post, I cant think of anything else to do.

    Processor Specifications:

    SL6W5
    2.60 GHz
    400 MHz
    128 KB
    478 pin
    0.13 micron
    1.25V-1.525V

    MB Spec

    Socket 478 for Intel® Pentium®4 processor
    Intel 845/ICH2 chipset
    Supports PC133 memory
    Creative CT5880 audio chip
    Realtek RTL8100 LAN chip
    Micro ATX form factor

First thing that come to mind for me are RAM, Lose connections, PSU problems RAM:- run Memtest, Lose connection:- just check all connections, PSU:- An easy swap, and your faster Proc is using more juice, than the previous one, and a handy thing to have around anyway. Hope that helps eliminate a few common things for your complaint.

Noticed you have not mentioned the make of your mouse you are using? If you are using the built in Microsoft PS/2 mouse driver you could try this = Under Advanced Settings [Control Panel = Mouse - Properties] set the sample rate to 200 and disable the advanced Fast Initialization/acceleration.

    Please Note!

I have had a simular problem for 11 months with a new computer using Windows XP SP2 [Special Built Tower] with a Gigabyte Mother Board and a large PCI MSI VGA card

Only the way I could tuirnoff/restart my computer was to manually press in the power button!!

Only a couple of weeks ago I found the problem I was having did relate to my Logitech Mouse MX500 using the Windows builtin PS/2 programming [The Logitech program in Jan 2005 that came with the mouse was a disaster!!]

The freezing happened when being amongst graphic programming within the [1] Internet, [2] Microsoft Works Suite [using Works] and [3] Ulead PhotoImpact Version 10 [Correcting/straighten cropping images].

I noticed the Mouse Freezing happened within the above programs when you scrolled your mouse down over the programs next to the right hand side of the monitor.

All this was corrected with the Logitech update program for most Logitech mouses [Incuding the MX500] = Mouse Ware Version: 9.79.1 build 25 Posted: 04/21/2006 Platform: Windows XP =

After installing the Logitech program I have set in the “Motion” folder = set Mouse PS/s Report Rate to “200” = Curser Speed and Acceleration to “No”. and slow down "Speed" by just a little?

Note! I have also downloaded implemented/used the additional Logitech Advanced Settings program of Utility for Mouse Ware 9.76 and above, Version: 1.1.0.1 Posted: 01/22/2004!!!.

Since then ihave not had a computer freeze!

    Please Note!
In the last few days I found for the Intel CPU by using the updating in "System Devices" it updated most of the Intel Drivers.
Now I also feel my computer is a lot better after these driver updates!

    Hope may be of assistance
    Regards

Do you mean your running O/C at 2.6ghz from 1.8!
If so, maybe tweak it down a bit (multi, vcore, fsb).....hows the temps?

    Regards....

Hi, thanks for all the replies. I will try to address all the issues I have looked at from those suggested.

Power - I had seen a couple of people had the same problems, freezing, as a consequence of psu being under power. However, I was running my last 350 watt Psu quite close to to edge and had upgraded to a cascom 500 watt P4 compatable fan.

RAM - I had upgraded my SDRAM prior to the processor upgrade with no problems, and everything ran very nicely prior to upgrade for weeks. The memory are a 512 and 256 card, non EEC, the cl's I think are different, but the Gigabyte site seems to say this is okay.

Connections - I have checked all the connections and nothing seems loose, although one of my ide cables does have an annoying tendancy to fall out at will every month or so.

Mouse - Well I have a usb mouse run through a 4 port hub, but I also have an ir keyboard and mouse in the ps2 [long story]. I will have a closer look at this and the system device drivers too.

    CPU - Nope a celeron 2.6mhz, no o/c ... yet.

A really strange thing though, my computer worked 4 hours with no probs yesterday. Today frooze within 2 mins of every boot up, for 3 boot ups, and now its running long enoug for me to bang this mail out. Really strange.

Another funny thing. I am running two sets of interchangeable drives on this system. On one drive it is very stable although still crashes every 8th or so time The other, it crashes all the flipping time, or runs okay for a fair while. Must just be a software error, but cant think in what.

So the solution, return the system back to a 1.8ghz, which has been done. Any other ideas plesae let me know.

Whilst looking through Ebay I noted a GA-8IDML board using a 2.66 SL6W5. Thought I might try this processor before replacing the board. Any views?

well that did not work. The SL6VV was dead as a doornail. Think it is new computer build time.
