    Hello!

My son just asked me if we could download this software and I told him I would check into it and get back to him. We already have Corel Paint Shop Pro, but he has some online friends who like GIMP and recommended it. I also have a laptop that doesn't have PSP on it, and I thought maybe I would give GIMP a try on that one as well.

    I'm considering downloading from here:

    http://www.download.com/GIMP/3000-2192_4-10073935.html

Or would here be better? I would imagine the official home page would be better?:

    http://www.gimp.org/

I can't find anything to indicate any major problems with this software, such as spyware coming in with it and such. I can't access the user forum from the gimp.org home page for some reason.

It looks like I wouldn't have to separately install this G2K+ runtime environment with this version, am I reading that correctly?

Is anyone else out there using this software, and if so, any problems or conflicts with it? I'm seeing mostly good reviews so far.

I'm using Windows XP Pro on the laptop and the only image managing software on that is Picassa, which I don't find very useful.

The Windows XP Media Center PC has some HP photo-editing software pre-installed, which has some handy features that I use. I also have installed Corel PSP X. I haven't given either one of the programs default status to manage images on the computer. I want them to sit quietly and do nothing unless I specifically want them to do something. :) I would want GIMP to do the same thing.

I don't do a lot of photo-editing, mostly correcting minor flaws in lighting, cropping, and resizing to e-mail photos (which, actually, my HP software does far more easily and efficiently than does PSP). My son, however, wants to do some work with graphics sigs, I believe. I would probably continue to use PSP on the PC and leave him to work with GIMP, and this way no one's settings get changed in a way that someone may not like. :) Will these 2 programs peacefully co-exist on the same computer?

    Thanks for any responses

GIMP is a great program, and is completely free (meaning you don't pay for it with money, adware, or anything else! ;-) ). I haven't installed it in awhile, so I can't give you detailed install directions, but it's definitely safe to download from the link solaris provided (MG link) or the official page you posted. Best of luck! :)

And no, it won't conflict with any other programs on your computer.

Thanks so much, Solaris and Mcmsc. :) I'll let the Java update I installed today settle into the PC and I'll probably download and install GIMP tomorrow, if all is stable. (I'm cautious about adding stuff to my systems.)

Your son probably will learn from his friends how to use this but this is for you to read when he is not around. ;)

Thanks, that will be a useful link. I'm going to install Gimp on my laptop so I'm sure I'll use it a lot. :)
