While I have no need for this software, I did download & install it. I then ripped an encrypted DVD-Video selecting the same settings as the original - it took just 32 minutes for the 128 minute video.

WinX DVD Author is video authoring software, not DVD ripping software.

 

Thanks for that. I've been frustrated and tired, lately, and wasn't making sense of what I was reading.

Another question - I can't find what versions of Windows these programs will run on. Any idea? I have XP and Vista.

 

I have installed it in Windows XP & 7.
It supports Windows XP to 10.

This giveaway seems to be being extended on a roughly weekly basis. However, now it has stopped saying 'for the holidays' or whatever the reference was to holidays and also may say that today's free giveways have been used up. The discounts, if you decide to buy, are pretty significant, though.
