Glary Utilities Running At Startup

When I start my PC and Windows starts up Glary Utilities (GU) is automatically loading. It has done this since I updated to the latest version a few days ago. As can be seen from the attached image I have Load Glary Utilities automatically on Windows startup unchecked. (1) Why might GU be loading at Windows startup? (2) As it's obviously ignoring my option what can I do?

GU: Glary Utilities Free version 6.4.0.7
    PC: Acer Aspire XC-840 1.0
    OS: Windows 11 Home (x64) Version 23H2 (build 22631.2861)

Just what ARE FREE "Glary Utilities?" Perhaps Malware in disguise? :( You apparently visited that site, or it got "piggybacked" with something else you downloaded. I'd definitely run some anti-virus and malware programs to try to find out what is going on. Can you at least "reset" your computer to a different (former) date, BEFORE the update and try again, ONLY from the Microsoft web site itself, (if you are using an alternate method of updates?)

Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL or right click the task bar and select Task Manager. Click on the Startup tab and disable the program there.
If that doesn't get it, download Autoruns and uncheck it in there, be careful with this tool.

Glary has been around forever, just like that "System Mechanics" and other "tune up" programs.

Glary Utilities is a program (available for download from MajorGeeks) that cleans up your PC. It is not a problem and it is not malware. ‘Free’ means what it says on the tin: it is the freeware version of Glary Utilities. I have no issue with the program. I have used it for years. My problem was, as stated, it is starting when I log on to Windows even though I have selected the option for this not to happen.

Having an issue with one’s computer is bad enough. Therefore, it would be better if people offered a known solution rather than wildly guessing about something they do not know about.

Thank you! I know about Task Manager. I was hoping to deal with the issue directly rather than using other options.

I will use Task Manager to put an end to it starting up when I don’t want.

I think Autoruns is too complex for me. I installed it weeks ago to prevent Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge always running in the background. However, they still do.

Even (supposedly from) "Major Geeks it could have harbored something along the way. I'm ALWAYS suspicious about "new" software" and utilities; even "Major Geeks" can be hacked, or pirated to some undesirable sites, that look OK.

    Then paranoia leads to inertia.

The internet is not 100% safe. MajorGeeks is a respected site and a very reliable source of downloads. It has never caused me a problem.

Glary Utilities is not new and is a well-known application.

Do some research about something before you criticise it. If you are going to careful about things you cannot do half measures.

Do not give advice where you do not have the knowledge to furnish that advice.

    Urm, the plot thickens.

I went to Task manager and Glary Utilities is not listed as a program running at start up.

Any other suggestions, please, if you do have them.

I've so far not had much luck with Autoruns.

If it runs at start up and sits in the system tray have you right clicked and seen if it has an option to remove from start up?

Ok, hit the Windows Key +R, in the run command type shell:startup and also check shell:common startup
These will open an Explorer window with programs that run at startup too. Just delete the shortcut from those folders.

If not Win+R and type services.msc look for a "Glary" service and disable it.

Still no luck? At this point it might be easier to find it with Autoruns.

The only thing listed there is my printer.

    Absolutely nothing listed there.

    It's not there today.

I'm going to put some padding on the brick wall before I start banging my head against it.o_O

Before you bang your head, why don't you download Revo Uninstaller (free version), run it, and see if it lists "Glary".
If it does, you might try uninstalling it two complete times. Then re-install Glary and see if your problem goes away. If it doesn't, you can always uninstall Revo and you haven't lost anything.
(I have used Revo several times in the past and it has always caught stuff that dedicated uninstallers miss.)

Did you go to the menu at top right in Glary Utilities and selected Settings. In the Settings dialog under General Settings is a toggle that states "Load Glary utilities automaticvally on Windows startup" - uncheck this.

Not all applications start from Windows Startup folders (as indicated by some of the post), some start from registry settings, which is where Autoruns would be useful in disabling applications that start when Windows starts. I use Advanced SystemCare Startup Optimise to disable and optimise the startup process, it also has a recommened % for applications to disable.

Hopefully, toggling that setting stops GU from starting when windows starts.

This problem has become a bit like toothache. When you get to the dentist's surgery it's gone.

I'm no longer having the problem. Why? I've not got a clue.

@the skeezix I already have, like and use Revo Uninstaller. I've uninstalled programs in the past when they were giving me probs. I always like to try other solutions first. I'm not sure how I'd uninstall it twice. After the first time surely it wouldn't appear in the list of installed programs on revo uninstaller.

@Maxwell yes I did GU's own option to have it not run at Windows startup and I'm sure I said that at the start of this thread. I've no faith in Autoruns. I was recommended it to stop some other programs running. They still run at startup.

    >>I'm not sure how I'd uninstall it twice.<<
Once after using Revo, I started it again and saw that it still listed the app I was trying to uninstall. So I ran Revo again and when I checked afterwards, it no longer listed the app.
    Or maybe I was dreaming...

Well, something went wrong. Revo Uninstaller is very good at getting rid of things in my experience. May be it didn't work first time for whatever reason. Maybe it was a very persistent program that didn't want to go. May be you dreamt it. The human mind is a weird thing and I'm convinced mine is getting weirder, or may be just worse, with age. For example, I just sat down at the PC to do something and starred at it blankly because I can't remember why. So I thought check your emails. I did and saw a post in ths thread so I'm answering it and still haven't the vaguest idea why I sat down at the PC.

I never meant to give advice, simply to disable/etc. AN Y (and all) programs not part of a new "upgrade" from Microsoft. I guess I'll just refrain from "Major Geeks" if that is your policy. Sorry "PC Tech Forums" disappeared, it was a LOT more helpful.

Dude the rule of thumb here is if you don't have an answer to the question/problem then don't give an answer. Bad advice is worse than no advice and you have been giving bad advice.

I'm not sure how your former favorite forum operated but only suggesting to use Microsoft products isn't how things work around here. We actually try to solve problems and that usually involves troubleshooting issues with 3rd party software.

Just relax. People help here in their free time and if we think something has malware we can usually identify and deal with it. Malware issues are no more alarming than non-malware issues.

Very much so! I, for one, really appreciate that. You could pay large sums of money to an alleged IT expert for these services given free on MajorGeeks, and in my experience for not as good a service. I'm ever thankful for the day I discovered this forum.
