?startling? Feels like a pretty small % of computer users actually surveyed, I'd not want to make sweeping generalizations from a sample size that small.

    (from the pdf)

PS, have a great day Oma :wave

If a survey was done with 10 thousand peeps and could be taken with a grain of salt then most other surveys could fall in that same category.

I dont understand where they get those numbers from? I live in Canada and none of my friends have legitimate windows copies, I am not even talking office etc. I got mine bundled with my Dell.:-D

Yeah small sample sizes can only when extrapolated out to give a % figure only be used as a rough guide, we have same in medical studies. While they are a good indicator at trends they are not accurate as not all folk when asked if they pirate software or media will own up, its natural human behaviour.

@putur, I can imagine then in that case you/your friends have more incidents of malware infection?

Piracy of software/media will never go away, the lawmakers can inforce all they like but the pirates and sites that host links are more cleaver then the lawmakers so they will always find away aroudn any blocks, it was only reciently that The Pirate Bay was suggesting to members to use VPN.

I can see self hosted FTPs coming back again, like the older days of sharing software and files around, FTP has never gone away as we use it in work to send securely files around the world, but in the file sharing community, it dropped off and in its place was P2P and Download File Sites.

Looking over the downloadable data, makes for interesting reading on the breakdown of data from always pirate to never vs age groups that allegedly pirate material.

If you combine the numbers for "never" with the numbers for "rarely" it's 80% for Canada and 83% for US. This doesn't seem like a serious problem in North America. the UK is 88%
Your copy is legitimate then. Why would your friends not have bundled copies?

This reminds me of something my college professor in Criminal Justice did on the first day of class.

First, he asked the class of about 200 "how many of you have been arrested for a felony?" No hands were raised.

Next, he asked "how many of you have been arrested for anything, whether you were guilt or not?" About five hands came up.

Then, he told everybody to put their heads down and cover their eyes with one hand. Here are the questions and answers:

"How many of you have been convicted of a felony?": About 15 hands.

"How many of you have been arrested?"" About 30 hands.

"How many of you have stolen something and not been caught?": Almost 100, about half the class.

The moral of this is that people won't admit to doing something illegal unless they're sure it's anonymous and the admission won't come back to bite them in the a**.

My personal feeling is answering the question if you have ever used pirated software (even "borrowing" a license code from a friend) is like the line about asking if you've ever had sex in the movie The Breakfast Club: If you answer "yes" you're a thief; answer "no" and you're a liar.

I suppose the other 41% use original copies
