A neighbor had a serious senior moment yesterday and let Global Techs PC
Support have remote access to her Win 8 HP laptop for a couple of hours.

She realized the error of her ways, contacted her credit card companies,
banks, etc.; changed all her passwords; called one of the major credit
    reporting agencies; and so on.

Her son, who is a rocket scientist, told her that they could have
planted any number of undetectable "devices" on her machine and that,
even if she does a Win 8 factory reset, there's no guarantee that doing
that would remove all of the devices. I assume he's talking about
"ordinary" malware so she's going to have him call me so I can get a
better idea of what he's concerned about.

At this point, she's frightened of even turning it on.

What would you do if you were faced with this computer? Win 8 reset?
    Nuke and pave? Something else?

I don't know what anti-malware she has on the machine -- whatever comes
with a new HP laptop, I presume, plus perhaps "Norton Security Suite" as
    provided by her ISP.

    Thanks.

    Hi

yes difficult at times to know the right thing to do when a cold caller phones up and tries to frighten you into allowing them access to your PC, some are very believable at times. OK it's fine for the techy types to notice these crooks but not everyone is PC savvy.

What I would suggest is to not have the PC online and backup any personal files she has to USB Pendrive or Skydrive (if she logs in with an email and password to this PC she will have a skydrive account likely already setup) and dump the personal file to that.

Write down any email settings that are needed plus any licence codes to software installed if not on the box they may have come with.

Two options, yes a Reset to Factory Settings is a good option and should wipe any malware if on the PC, but I would once all the personal files are backed up run the below and have our malware experts help find any malware and remove it. They do not remote into any PC, they read logs that anti-malware software produces and give you fixes you do.

Need to be in the internet for the below though.... but should not be a major issue so log as no bank accounts or online shopping is being done now.

OK. Just to be sure, you're suggesting:

    1. Copy personal files to external medium
    2. Use Windows 8 Reset (not Refresh)
    3. Follow the "Remove Malware Guide"
    4. Post logs
    5. Eventually copy personal files back to her laptop

    Thanks.

    Hi

In part you have the options

    1. Copy important files and refresh and then copy the important files back
    2. Run the malware read me and allow our malware experts to remove the malware with your assistance as all of the fixes are done your end we do no remote connections and this could remove the need for a "refresh"

Personally I would go the Read Me malware guide route and allow our malware experts to help you remove any malware found, they are very good and our chief malware experts is a Microsoft Most Valuable Person in the area of Security and Malware removal, so they know what they are doing, if you gain a bill of health then no need for the refresh.

I just give you choices from your post.
