I really like GoBack and there is discussion of its merits on another posting to the forum. My problem is that I CAN'T get it to create lots of Safe Points and CERTAINLY not go to an earlier date!

It creates a few restore points on a day and then something removes them again when the computer is shut down. I even reinstalled GoBack to try and solve the problem but I can't. Any ideas?

When you re/installed GoBack, what disk volume did you allocate for GoBack to store the disk changes it monitors? Too little then you run the risk of GoBack not being able to store all the changes that have been made. I've allocated around 5% of my disk. The default is around 10% of your disk.

Thank you for responding. I allocated at least the default value- I don't remember altering it and I can't seem to work out how to check now. I don't know how to manually create safe points either.

Which version of GoBack do you have? The full retail version or the free version that used to come with Norton SystemWorks? - the options are slightly different. I do have both but use the full product and so cannot tell you about the options in the free version.

The allocation of the disk space can be checked by looking at the size of the file gobackio.bin in the root directory of your C drive. This is where GoBack stores its information.

Also, if you use Norton's disk fragmenter (SpeedDisk) then the GoBack reserved disk space is shown as an immovable block of disk and the relative size indicates the volume of disk allocated to GoBack.

You can also create a "Norton Goback Drive" to create a snapshot to recover to but this is not the same as a Safe Point.

From the on-line help for Safe Points:

Thank you for this. I ran Speed Disk as you suggested and the big area for GoBack is about 20% of the disk. I knew it was big enough though! I used to use a stand-alone version of GoBack but because of this problem I installed the version that came with Systemworks. The result is the same although I didn't notice any difference between the versions. But I AM baffled, I don't know how I can get it back to how it used to be!
