Any others here agree with the above statement???
Trying to do "surds" which are mixed in with fractions, ouch!

Also just had a second unofficial driving lesson which was fun, got into second gear :)

i've never heard of surds... what is it exactly?

I always did well in math... luckily i only had to take 2 semesters at math in college, only went up to Calculus 1.... derivatives were my arch nemesis...

taking math classes at a large school is the absolute worst... 200 kids in a lecture hall trying to learn new math concepts from a foreign math teacher with an indian accent.... joy

I had a hard time with math as a teen, primarily because I had a learning disability and the teachers didn't recognize it and thus didn't know how to teach math in a way I could understand. I devised my own way to break things down as a result. It took several years to fine tune it and now I enjoy math. I pulled a 4.0 this past quarter in trig. In comparison, I had a 73 in trig in high-school and failed pre-calc.

Surds are just numbers in terms of roots of others. An example might be 2*sqrt(2).

Maths is a hard subject to learn, and it REALLY helps to have a good teacher. This year I'm glad to say in Core I've got a decent teacher, so I might actually learn properly! Shame about my Mechanics teacher, though.

mcadam - what modules are you doing? If you need help in M1 (if you're taking that) I'm always available :) Also, with surds, just work with them like indecies and it makes a lot more sense :)

I'm doing core 1 and 2 and then modules 1-6 in mechanics, but I'm thinking about dropping it after this first half term.

I've moved on to see what my physics cdrom is like and it's awful!

i see they have very different terms for math in the UK...

here we just usually call the classes:

    Algebra 1-2
    Advanced Algebra
    Trigonometry
    Geometry
    Calculus 1-5

    etc...

Up in new york they had math a, math b then calculus, but I think they just changed that.

Im in algebra 1, almost repeated pre-algebra for a 3rd year but i had a algebra tutor this summer, i still DONT enjoy doing math, and i can understand some of it kinda now. Im doing multipliying and dividing polynomials...

I like math, it's the application of it I hate. I hate doing vectors and stuff in real life situations.

M1-M6!?!!?!?!? You must be doing further maths... surely?? I'm only doing M1 and M2. M3-M6 include stuff from FP1-FP2.

And so far as physics is concerned - M1 is just like Unit 1 in OCR Physics A, but without the radioactivity, and with unit vectors ;). M2 is much more fun - you learn how to do trajectories :D

Well, i guess i dont feel too bad that i suck at math :D Since im the ONLY 9th grader in Biology (a class full of seniors  ) but their all cool...

When I was in high school (13 years ago)...it was...

    pre-algebra
    algebra 1
    algebra 2
algebra 3 (algebra, geometry, and triganometry)
    calculus

I myself took math all the way through high school (you were only required to do 3 years) and I maxed out in algebra 3.

    Sorry I wasn't clear.
M1-6 for Mechanics and C1 and C2 for pure maths.

Ah, so you're doing a Mechanics A Level and a Maths A level (seperate). Whats your applied module for the Maths AS? S1, D1? If it were me I'd drop the mechanics a-level so I could do M1 and M2 and have that as the applied modules in the Maths A2. Unless you want to do S1 and D1 as well :p

Nooo noooo argh it's hard to explain!
It's maths with mechanics as one subject, called pure and applied, and i do the pure bit most of the week but have one lesson of mechanics a week.

I feel for the younger members of MG. When I went to High School there was math, algebra1, algebra2, and Trig. I chose the easy way and took Math which was easier than what I'd been through in grade school. ;)

Interesting. I did a bit of research and you can do M1-6 as an A-Level by itself, but if you're doing normal Maths you need to have different modules.

In my case I did C1 and 2 last year, as well as M1 which was my Maths AS. This year I'm doing C3 and 4, and M2 to complete me Maths A2. From what I understand you do C1 and 2 compulsary for the AS, and one applied module.

But if you're doing the mechanics A-Level, you need to have another module to count as your applied module in Maths. In other words, you can't use M1 twice. I guess it all depends what board you're doing...

Please tell me how to do that! I had to drop my major of Chemistry because I was failing math, and nobody knows what to do with me. I am on the borderline of a math learning disability, but not considered having it. Can you help?

it's not something that is really able to be tought, I had to develop it according to my style of learning.

My problem is that I jumble numbers up in my head. When there are too many numbers to deal with, I can't focus and I lose it. My functional problem was that I could not cope with completing a problem in my head as a result of the jumbling of the numbers. I would fail to be able to apply formula's. Another problem I have is that I have to know how EVERYTHING works down to the smallest detail and how "they" devised "xyz" to attain "abc" results. Additionally, all the "symbols" threw me. I had to see forumlas with using numbers and not letters.

I just had to let go of it. I just had to let math do the math and not worry about the nitty-gritty details. I had to write everything down and practice memorizing numbers in sequences. It took a lot of time and I have to constantly work on it. You'll have to find something similar for yourself.

What exactly is Maths? It sounds like bad english, or English -101.

I got as far as calculus and said F this noise. I was an advanced english and Math major, and neither one was taught in any way that made it life applicable. I mean WHY did let people start using calculators? Anyone can be taught to push buttons, but long hand is the only way to learn!

If they had taught mathematics as applicable to fractal design, or applied science maybe more people would actaually care...

It's how we say "Math" in the UK. I'm having a hard time dropping the "S" on this one!

I found a good solution... I turn my brain off (sounds impossible but i do it) and i do math. Everyone knows not to talk to me because they know i cant hear them... I suppose its kind of like sleeping, and doing math. The teacher shows me what i have to do, i do it whilst he is teaching the lesson, then i read and turn my brain back on after class. its sounds impossible but basically, DONT THINK, JUST DO. Thats what works for me!
