Going back to dual-WLAN'ing

Revisiting the old dual-NIC question, but with a twist.

I'm thinking to use my desktop-replacement (XP SP2, currently Intel 2200BG WLAN) as a kind of "mobile server", with a netbook for fieldwork.

One card would be for connecting to the local WiFi as usual, the other would be for a private VPN to the netbook, so I could park the big beast somewhere out-of-the-way but secure and carry the netbook out into, say, the stacks of a library.

Is what I'm thinking of even possible?
