I decided to break down and buy a new computer. My old computer had windows 7, the new one will have windows 10.
I want to break windows 10 to my will. In short: Remove all crapware, make sure it only upgrades when I want to upgrade, muzzle bing, Cortana, the whole 9 yards. (If I can get it to make coffee when I demand it, so much the better, and it damn well better grind them beans as well!)

What programs do you have that will help with this, Major?

(Side note: EVERYTHING I need from the old computer is backed up to an external HD. I'll be able to get my email, browser settings, and all without difficulty, and don't expect to need help doing that.)

I think you need the Pro version to do that so don't buy a computer with Win 10 Home.

Note: I don't run Win 10 and have no intention of ever running it. I'll move to android, linux or ChromeOS. (I refuse to pay an exorbitant amount of money for any Apple hardware.)

I haven't been able to get any of our Win 10 Pros to make coffee yet Maybe Cortana can help - I'll keep trying

    Hey, Plodr!
Thank you for the response. Doing a bit of checking: The system I am buying comes with Windows Home. There is one they sell with IDENTICAL specs that has windows PRO; the price difference is $300.00. (Well, $298.73. You get the idea.) Checking online suggests I can upgrade easily from Home to Pro for a cost of $99.00, so I'm gonna fix this by throwing money at the Windows Store, NOT at the computer store.
If the games I played had a Linux version I would gladly drop windows, but... (The Windows emulators on Linux would work, but the latency they might induce would have me leaving corpses all around the gaming world.)

FYI - You can buy heavily discounted Windows and/or Office license keys online from companies in Hong Kong:

How they manage this, I don't know. The way I look at it: if they were doing something illegal, Microsoft would have shut them down a long time ago. I've bought several Windows 10 Pro license keys for around $15 apiece. All of them were accepted by Microsoft for product activation, and so far, none have been rejected while in use. The seller has an instant replacement policy if the key doesn't work. It's worth a look.
