I'm running Intell 3.2 cpu& Intell D865GBF MB. 1gig of ram (2/512 ddr dual) I'm thinking about trying out the amd's. I'm wanting to go to upgrade higher than what i'm running now but in AMD. I'd rather get the mother board& cpu as a bundel.I have All-in-Wonder9000 pro that i'm happy with & Sound Blaster card so I don't need any on board. I don't know that much about AMD's . Any Idea's or suggestions. Thanks in Advance Chuck

AMD processors excell with Graphics and Algorithm computations this is what they were designed to do with their 3DNow! extensions and MMX units built in, they are more temperature tollerant too. My AMD Athlon XP2200 1.8Ghz is actually out performing a Pentium 4 at 2.4Ghz. My graphics are fast even at full spec resolution , where as my mates poor lil P4 is jittery and the sound breaks up during a graphics update. even his windows xp suffers the window lag when moving windows around. he uses a Nvidia FX5700 128Mb and I use ATI 9800 Pro 128MB graphics card.
An investment in an AMD is a wise and long lived one ;)
ps and there cheaper than pentiums too lol

Side note: MMX, MMX2, and MMX3 was originally for Intel only, but now of course AMD has it.

I remember back when intel went to Slot 1, and AMD whined and moaned that INTEL had to share that technology. Afterwords, amd dropped it fairly quickly, Intel dropped it during the P3 era.

yeh but mine still runs faster than his P4 so im not going to argue il just grin smuggly at my mate while he "jitters" through his games lol

also he told me how much his pc cost him (over 1000 quid from a catalogue) all he got was a printer, the monitor, his pc(which only had on board graphics, the P4 and 256Mb of ram) and a pair of speakers a ball mouse and a keyboard. RIP OFF i coughed, mine cost me less than all that to build myself!! (look in my profile to see my kit) so i gave him a stick of 256 from my old kit, and my old FX5700 card to boost him up a little, and my old optical mouse. im kind like that lol.

I'd suggest that has more to do with his system not being properly tweaked than because of his P4, mine runs rock solid, may not beat the latest AMD64 line, but then mine was designed competing against AMDs XP line

Actually, I'd wager this has more to do with it, than the CPU:

Switch cards and watch your AMD struggle.

lol why do you think i bought a new card ,besides that should have nothing to do with the normal everyday activities of windows xp .... surely

irt cepy ... I wouldn't upgrade untill next year or so, because a 3.2GHz p4 can handle just about anything you can throw at it today .. however next year when windows64 hits the market and there will no doubt be a CPU that will be worth the price of upgrading from what you have .. I would suggest upgrading that radeon 9000 though as that would improve game performance(if you game that is) ... but if you're happy with it

Pyrate~ Thanks I'm very happy with my set up . I've built alot of P4's but never built a AMD,or ran one side by side. This is all in the thinking stage.I'm still not sure about the speeds of Amd's. Witch of the AMd's are at the same speed i'm running now (P4 3.2). Thanks to everyone who replyed.
AMDxp Thanks for Your reply,Your very right about the heat. That is about my only beef with mine. I've installed a 2'' pipe into the back of my tower whitch goes down to the basement to a 3'' squirl cage fan. I only need it when I record movies, but it works great. Thank's to ya alll CHUCK
