I have burned some DVD to my C drive. When I open up GOM to play them the file is huge! 5,6 even 7 GB...what? I open the VIDEO_TS file and see dozens of subfiles... I have .vob and .ifo files under VTS_4,5,6,7,8,9,. OK, I'm an idiot. How can I get JUST the 800 or 900 MB of actual movie???
    Thx

DVD's are usually between 4gb and 6gb. That is to give maximum quality. The movie is usually divided up into several .VOB files each just under 1gb with the last one being smaller because it is whatever is left. You can try DVDFAB to extract just the main movie but it will still be in the 4gb range and need to be encoded to something smaller if you want to keep it on your HD.

To make a smaller AVI file you need to re-encode using something like AutoGK. It will take a couple of hours to convert for each DVD.

I did use Dfab to copy DVD. How do I save all the files into one cohesive file`? You say files are 4-7 gb. Why when I check the movies already on my computer do they say 600,700 and 800 mb ?

The 600, 700 and 800mb files are type avi, correct?

They have already been re-encoded using a program like AutoGK.

DVDs contain larger files because they are made to work on very large screens. People that choose to watch movies on their PC often convert the movies to avi because it contains enough information to look good on smaller PC screens and takes up less space on the HD.

If you want to keep a smaller file on the HD you will have to convert the files. If you look at that link for AutoGK you will see you can choose an output size of 1CD/700mb. AutoGK will do all the necessary calculations and you will end up with a 700mb copy of the movie in avi format. It takes a couple of hours to convert. You can then delete the original VIDEO_TS folder.

There is no simple way to extract a small copy of a movie directly from DVD. Conversion is necessary.

I'm playing with AutoGK. So there isn't a program that will simply clone a DVD and its size/content directly to my hard drive? It's hard to believe someone hasn't written a program to make it a one step process. Don't get me wrong, your help is very much appreciated.
