Good Antivirus?

Hi guys. My antivirus (Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007) expired months ago. The 2007 IMO was horrible since it completely lagged my computer for some reason. This never happened with the 2006 version which is why I was disappointed. Can you guys recommend a good anti-virus? I've heard Kapersky is good. I want one that was good features, like anti spy-ware and real-time protection, a good catch %, and one that doesn't lag my computer down. I've been googling reviews but each review is different and I'm not sure which to trust.

I have AVG on my spare computer and I don't really care for it much. I've heard a lot about NOD32. Is that good? Also, what about BitDefender?

Also, is it nessesarry to have the Internet Security version? It nearly triples the price for most and I'm wondering if it's a good thing to have.

I ran NOD32 for a while when i was looking for a new AV and found it slowed my PC down to a considerable degree but others have found it excellent.

I am at the moment running AVG free version it works very well for me coupled with SYGATE firewall also free here on MGs

A little program was tried amongst some of us, and tested the various free antyvirus software, and Avast came out as one of the few to detect and remove it.
So I would recommend it it. It is also Vista compliant now.

Haven't noticed any slow down on my system. Have had it on my PC for over 2 years.

i believe it is in conflict with something on my system but have not done anything to alleviate the situation (just lazy i guess) since i changed i have not had a problem.

to be fair other than my own experience i have only heard good things about NOD32.

sorry i did not mean to be negative about it maybe i should think a little more how i phrase things

No, no, no, I didn't take that as a negative remark. I took that as a statement of fact of how NOD32 interacts with your system. I guess I was trying to let urmom know that the same software may act differently on different systems.

I'm not a fanboy of any antivirus, firewall, browser, etc. If a better mousetrap comes along, I'll give it a try.

Seems the older I get the less I do think about how I phrase things. :)

If we could do away with all the security measures we would all be a lot happier but due to the D***heads that feel a need to show the world how good they are at chaos we have to accept it until as you say they come up with a better mousetrap but then the mice will look for another way to steal the cheese

I've installed a 30 day free trial of NOD32 and it is pretty good so far. It doesn't really have good network features though. It sais it is NOD32 Antivirus System, not Internet Suite so I'm guessing that I'll have to download a free firewall.

Hmm, so Sygate is a good free Firewall?

I use Comodo Pro firewall. Works well with NOD32. Doesn't use a lot of resources.

If you want to check it out just Google "Comodo Firewall".

BTW, BILLMCC66, well stated! Especially like the thumbnail.

Over the past year I have used serval Anti-Virus software.

From my experince I recommend the following.

    AVG
    NOD32
Sysmantic (Corp edition because the normal one isn't worth it)

If you are looking for something that doesn't eat up resorces I would recommend NOD32

Wow the Comodo firewall is great! One thing though, when I installed it and restarted my computer, NOD32 didn't start up (well it wasn't on the system tray) and I had to manually start it. Any idea why this would happen?

AVG Free 7.5 is a good idea if you're on a budget, you can get a good Anti-Spyware tool from them as well. Spybot Search & Destroy is good, and if you have Windows XP, Google Pack offers Spyware Doctor as a freeware tool. I also find SUPERAntiSpyware quite useful. For XP, Comodo firewall is best, for Vista, ZoneAlarm.

A good mix of tools might look like this:
One AntiVirus tool (Optionally it might be commercial AntiMalware, dealing with both types of threat, or a commercial Security Center, adding a firewall to the mix. I mostly don't like Security Centers, but I don't lay all my eggs in one basket.)
One Firewall (Skip this option if you have a Security Center tool.)
Two AntiSpyware tools (Avoid real-time protection tools if you have an Anti-Malware tool already, though a scanner with a blocker included is gravy)
One Spyware Blocker (JavaCool's Spyware Blaster provides good Active-X protection, and will protect Mozilla Firefox)
Early Warning (McAfee Site Advisor provides early warning against sites with complaints of malware and other threats, and setting the Google phishing filter in Firefox will warn against online scams)

    urmom,

I think I know why. I have a tool at home called SafeZilla that blocks many programs on my computer from starting, until I activate them. I think Comodo might be similarly paranoid. It's always seemed paranoid to me when I tested it at work, which can be a very good thing. As long as you are able to choose which programs to turn on, there might not be anything to worry about, it may even be useful in keeping your system from being overtaxed.

    Chipper :)

Really don't know. Never had that problem when I installed Comodo.

Check msconfig on the Startup tab and see if NOD32 is listed.

If not, place a shortcut to NOD32 in the startup folder.

After you boot and you don't see the NOD32 icon in the tray, open Task Manager and see if nod32km.exe and nod32kui.exe are running.

I have the same thing happen with SpywareGuard. It will be running but sometimes the icon is missing from the tray. I think sometimes it's one of the many quirks of Windows.

I had the same problem when i first installed SYGATE PRO it did not show up on the tray until i had rebooted 3 or 4 times (no idea why)it has corrected itself also it did not show in System Mechanic it kept on saying NO Firewall detected but that has also come good.

Strange how nobody mentioned Avira's AntiVir. I've been using it for years and it's never let me down. The only time I even know it's there is when it auto updates and throws up that 'nag screen' (which actually has a fairly amusing cartoon on it right now). That's the only negative thing I can think of about AntiVir. I swear by AntiVir and have been recommending it for years, and it works fine with just about any firewall or antispyware program. I use it with Comodo's BOClean and Comodo's Firewall and everything runs fine; no resource issues. Do some research, you'll find that AntiVir is consistently one of the highest rated (or THE highest rated) free AV apps available; it even beats out many paid products! IMO it's much better than Norton or MCaffee and those two are massive resource hogs, but we all knew that already ;) Anyway- check out AntiVir, if you like it, keep it. If it's not what you're looking for, simply uninstall it and try something else.

I'll try restarting my computer again after to see if it will start up. It was in the MSCONFIG thing so I'm not exactly sure why it didn't start. But what I like the most about NOD32 and Comodo is that they use very little resources (Trend Micro had 2-3 processes taking up 70+k mem usage). I had to completely close out of Trend Micro to play Counterstrike. Counterstrike is still a little laggy but maybe I can fix that.
