Good but cheap video cards

hey wonderin whats the cheapest but best videocard for playin far cry,half life 2, and doom3?thnx

 

I wouldn't go lower than a 9600pro or a 5700ultra

 

well the best bang for the buck right now is the nVidia Geforce 6600GT, which will cost you about $160 for an AGP verison. those games are pretty graphics intensive, but this card can do them all pretty well.

they will still play on a card like an ATi Radeon 9600pro or 9600xt, but not as well, especially if you dont have a nice computer to back them up.

 

I would also strongly suggest the 6600 GT, it's easily the best value/performance chip on the market at the moment.

 

what are the specs of the rest of your computer?

 

1 gig of ram,lan party ut fp30 250 gig,raptor 30 gig hard drive (runs at 10,000 rpm),
480 watt power supply, floppy drive ,and a regular disk drive.

the rest looks pretty good tho' so you prolly have a higher end processor
so I would agree, get a 6600gt (or better).
the only reason I even said a 9600pro/5700ultra, because IMO those are the
minimum cards you need to play hl2 decently ( i know i used to have a 9600pro- )

Processor is an AMD 64 atholon socket 754.

 

A ati 9250 should be able to allow u to play hl2 and doom3, i have a friend who are playing doom3 with the above card with no problem.

that depends on your concept of 'play'. Sure it will run, and sure its doable--but not like its meant to be and might not be enjoyable. Thats my take on it, but to each their own

 

5700's and half life2 dont mix,trust me,I agree 6600 IMO,it will fit in nicely with the rest of your system,since you gone for quality parts in th rest of your pc. If you mean cheap cheap the ti4000's can play hl2 pretty smooth,but with less detail.

 

yeah, i recommend radeon 9250. Plays Sims2 at 1024x768 32bit no probs.
doom3 runs good aswell, but i'm running them on a 3GHz chip and 512MB ram.
I havent tried hl2, I'll get it at the next StickLAN party.

you can buy this card for $80 AUS, and it has DVI, S-Video, RCA plug adapter, and standard output. this card is 128MB, and I think there is a 256 MB version for $130 AUS.

 

Just fer giggles I stuck my old Ti4200 in to see how well it would run HL2 & I was suprised. It ran purty smooth actually. It would run @ 1024x768 32bit, but a tad shakey at times, running it @ 800x600 32bit it run smooth enough to play the game.

The 5900XT I have now runs HL2, Call of Duty, Americas Army, Batlefield Vietnam, TOCA Race Driver 2 & a few other games very nice. You can pick them up for well under $200 most the time.

 

my dad doesnt want an ati card in my computer.

If you dont mind me answering,they are all the same as long as the core frequency and memory clock are the same speed,you have chosen the 6600gt,the criteria you should next look at is customer support,the closest shop you could buy one from incase you have to return it,if you can pick it up from around the corner great,THE PRICE,the software bundle that most appeals to you and the looks of the card if you have a windowed case,in no particular order.

 

BFG have great customer support and very good products, about as good as it gets really.

 

Hey i can play Doom 3 with my old school system.

Athlon 2000XP @ 1.67ghz (Not overclocked but parametres modified)
512MB DDR Ram (As Above)
Gefroce 4 Ti 4800 (Overclocked core from 300mhz to 335mhz)
It can manage Doom 3 @ 800 res and medium detail no probs.

Funny thing is i used to use the ti 4200 and broke it last month then bought a ti 4800 to replace it, the fan failed on that so then bought an artic cooling system which in turn made it up to the price of about a FX5600 256mb
Dunno if that would have whooped my Ti 4800

Doesn't like HL2 much though as that games mostly cpu depeandant.
I've seen athlon 2600's struggle with it

 

Well look at it this way.
A Pentium 2.0ghz is fast
an athlon 2400xp has a 2ghz clock speed but it would perform better than the pentium because of the tecnology is uses.
The 3400XP has the same speed aswell but it would inialate both cpu's mentioned above.
The Ghz might not be mind blowing but the processor still performs amazingly

My friends Athlon 1400mhz T bird can run half life 2 at minimum
With a 340064bit it will run HL2 like a walk in the park
