I have a nearly new HP deskjet. Works fine, but the ink gets used up incredibly fast considering I do mostly text printing with an occasional small graphic. The ink costs as much as the printer does.
Any ideas for a inkjet that is not quite so incredibly ink thirsty?
BTW I have inkjets before, but this is the most ink greedy one I have EVER had.

I have used refill kits with limited success, sometimes need to print a few pages to get cartridge working again. It can be messy so do it in a sink or other safe place until you feel comfortable doing it. I have not tried the color ones yet, just black. Just peeled the label off of the hp ink cartridge, found the hole to the core, inserted the needle and squeezed. Some stores also sell "generic" replacement cartridges for less than the name brand. The price of ink is insane, I rarely use our printers because of it.

Yup... that's where they get ya... it's with the ink. The initial cost of an inkjet printer is really low (I've seen all-in-one units on sale for under $50) but ink prices are ridiculous. Personally, I bought a used black-only laser printer at a thrift store for $10; an HP LaserJet 1100. A new toner cartridge was $39 on Ebay. The laser toner lasts MUCH longer than ink. I don't have a real need for color printing, and when I do, I just use a friend's printer and it's just a page or two. With laser toner, you can also buy tubs of the powder and you can refill the cartridges really easily with a small plastic funnel. On this last refill, I have printed well over 400 pages and it's still going strong (I know it's that high 'cuz one print job was a Toshiba laptop manual at 320 pages). The point is: look into getting a laser printer. Compared to inkjets, new ones are a bit more costly, and the toner is a bit more costly, but if you do lots of black/text printing, you will save money in the long run, and they tend to print faster also.

You also have to check how much ink is in the cartridge. Old HPs had 41ml. Then it went down to 19ml-21ml and now it can be as low as 5ml!!!
I tell people that before they decide on any printer, see what the # of the cartridge is and check how much ink it holds.

I refill my cartridges it is much cheaper and I try not to print unless it is necessary. What I do find when I have not printed for a month or so, which happens very often with me they seem to dry out. A small tip on this point put the cartridge in very hot water for a short while this rejuvenates them, just remember to dry them well with a paper towel be for putting them back in.
