Good connection Sucky ping on games!

HELP PLEASE! i have DSL (512) i have a 90 feet long cable a laptop and a desktop , i used to play online games on the desktop but now i cant , i go into the game and i get a 90 ping COOL, but then after 30 secs or 1 minute i get 400 then 800 then 999 and i cant play, i already changed my ethernet cable,i changed my network card i formated my hard drive i have xp pro, i used a 3 foot long cable directly to the desktop from the modem avoiding the router i did the DRtcp and some other things, i can browse really well and download fast but i cant play. thats the reason i got DSL in the first place. im newb at this im so frustrated can someone please help!!!

 

My fella gamer friend, you must understand that even if you have a heavenly connection to Internet, the game server you connect to might still be overloaded, have problems or simply far from where you are...
...if you can run traceroute to that server (assuming the problem is happening only with certain games/servers) check to see how the connection looks....you might have less than 20ms between some hops but then one of the hops might be 200+ indicating an obvious problem in your connection. If that is the case you might inform your ISP about the problem.

 

thx for answering i already spoke with my ISP but they say that if im browsing its not their problem, they just dont listen, and the problem is in any game i play, call of duty, half life 2 deathmatch, doom3 , quake 3 ,starcraft, warcraft, battlefiled 1942, joint operations , world of warcraft etc.

 

I hear you ISPs generally very evasive when it comes to dealing with this type of somewhat vague problems, especially since they do not control each hop(switch, router) the data travels through.
Have you actually tried running a trace route utility (or simply from the command prompt in Windows command is tracert space then the destination IP. if you see that the delay on any of the hops is greater than say 100, it could be sign of bottleneck hence your connection issue.
Other possibilities coming to my mind (since I had DSL for about a year a while back) are:
~DSL modem
~Line problem from your house to the phone company's central box where you connect thru.
~Some sort of a line interference on your DSL lines (do making phone calls or receiving cause any disturbance on your connectivity?
~Finally...your system has -I hate to say it but- malware infection (spyware, trojan). Have you scanned your system and also follow the steps posted on the sticky notes on this site's 'Spyware Specific' forum?

 

hi thx again for helping , here is what i have done:

I formated my computer complete and flashed the bios, i changed my NIC and ethernet cable, i tried connecting with a very short cable (since i have a 90 feet long one but it worked fine before, and now i can browse and download with no problems) i connected direct to the modem without my router i tried with no firewalls, no antivirus , i replaced the line filters on all my house extensions and still i cant play any game online.

 

sorry i forgot to tell you i did a traceroute to a Call of duty server the highest ping was 160

 

lol no one has good ping on doom3 i hear

 

my opinion but i think you just wasted time formatting HD and flashing bios.

 

i know i wasted my time formating and flashing bios but im desperate i change my DSL to another line and still have the same problem took my computer to a friends house i played with a 80 ping for 6 hours, so its my line but my isp is the same as the dsl and they just say that if i can browse is not their problem.
