Good firepower game for a beginner?

Any advice for a game to run on Vista for someone who is new to games,
(meaning I am new to games - last game was in 1993)? I would like the usual shooting, good earhtling vs aliens, or something similar. Nothing too super fast action or I will be shot down in the game before I can draw my gun.

 

I like Counter Srike Source. Fun game that you can play for a few mins or for a long time. Not sure if it is compatable with Vista, but I think it would work.

Half Life 2 has problem solving and lots of shooting.

He want's a game that's possible to win, so GRAW 2 is a bad idea.

Call of Duty is good, as is CoD2. Halo is also very fun despite any other feelings you might find about it. Those three each have something being driven out of more current FPS's. Story.
