I’m going to buy a new laptop.

I’d like comments on this spec and value for money.

    Make: Medion
    Model: Akoya
    Screen: 15.5” HD LED screen
    Memory: 4 GB
    Hard drive: 500 GB
    Operating system: 8.1
    Price: £209

    HI

Do you have a link to the full specs as Medion are down the budge range of computing, and I would want to see what the CPU is?

Also what would you want to be using the laptop for as thats the biggest hurdle for laptops, if just surfing and a little bit of word processing then budget ones are fine, but and any gaming or photo manipulation to than the not IMHO.

But the full specs and what you want to use it for may help us answer you much better.

    Hi David

Thanks for the advice. I've already learnt one thing. I always thought Medion was a good German make. My partner used to work for a German retailer that told a lot of Medion and I always thought it good stuff not budget and they often gave a 2 year guarantee rather than the typical 1 year we get in UK. I had a Medion desktop once and was happy with it.

Here's a slighlty different spec. I note you're in UK so you'll know of ASDA which is where I saw it. For another £9 I can buy one with a 1 TB HDD direct from Medion's web site.

The spec: Medion Website (This link let's you see all 3 versions of this mode (there were 3 there last night, now there's 2).)

A 500 GB HDD might be enough for me anyway. I have a desktop with a 500 GB HDD. I've had it over 4 years and the HDD isn't even half full.

I use my PCs alot for work and then transfer things to work so I don't have huge storage needs.

As for use it's primarily MS Office, surfing the Net and emailing, watching YouTube and I download a lot of music too. I don't download films and I don't play games.

    Hi David

I meant to include this in my previous post: the money I'm spending is a birthday gift. Without this gift I'd not be buying a laptop. So, the £200 is the working budget, which obviously isn't going to buy me the top end of the range laptop with all the whizzes and bangs.

As I could (would prefer not to) add to that money, what would you recommend in terms of manufacturer.

As I've said I don't need a spec for gaming. My current laptop is about 7 years old and to indicate my use of HDD space it has 100 GB with 48 GB still unsused. Admittedly anything that's going to want huge amounts of storage I do on my 500 GBB desktop and I do have a lot of old, but must save, stuff on a 500 GB external hard drive.

    HI Mark

I think higher up the range then they are same as HP, DELL etc and if your happy with the brand then that's all that matters, we all have fav brands.

With what you have described, then that model will do general work as in Office type stuff and surfing and downloading as the downloading side is covered by the speed of your internet.

HDD wise I think 500GB is really good as if you need more just get a portable external HDD, can get 1TB ones for £50 these days.

The CPU is a lower end one, but fine for what you mention, plus the actual Pro point is its a low wattage one so is good for battery life, the next model up which has a Intel i3 is MEDION AKOYA E6241 Laptop (MD98892) and its speed ration with the Pentium one MEDION AKOYA E6239 Laptop (MD98718) is https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2278&cmp[]=2410

Other specs are good, USB3.0 always handy now with USB external devices easily found and fairly cheap, HDMI out is nice, I would imaging via your company you get full version MS Office over needing to buy it past the 30 day trial.

for £209 its not bad at all and better spec than I've found in many

EDIT: must have been typing as you added info and I agree, best bang for your £ working budget,
As for others makers I have had good experiences with ACER, HP and DELL, but always will be bad ones too, I kinda thing we shy away from the not so well known brands from outside the UK, kinda like we do with goods from Lidl and Aldi, some going to be better or no worse than M&S, ASDA,Tescos, but some not so good, but if your experiences with this brand are positive then go with that, hardware wise for the cost its good IMO

    Hi David

It's funny you should mention Acer as a good make. Acer is the make of my current laptop. I'ts about 7 years old and still working well. Funny how prices have come down, this was about £400.

I wasn't sure if Acer is a good make. The same place I saw the Medion has an Acer. To be honest I now get what you mean by budget. I know it's what's under the bonnet that matters but the Acer just looked to have a more professional finish to it. However, I don't know the spec so can't post it. Like I say I always thought Medion was a good make. I know little about things like HDMi and USB3 although I know USB3 is better. Looking at the Acer it didn't seem to have as many places or connecting external things (there's a technical term for you) as the Medion. So I don't know.

It's a shame I can't take an expert with me to buy it.

Regarding Office I own a full copy and my employer's licence covers its use by staff at home. So I don't need the free 30 day trial to MS Office 365.

I don't need and don't want the anti-malware software that comes with them and I wouldn't buy a PC with Norton on it. Don't get me wrong I want anti-malware but I'll put my own on from the recommended stuff here on this forum.

    Hi Mark

I've had 3 ACER laptops and all great (ok one did, but I have to say once I gave it away was launched down my sisters stairs by one of my nieces, so did end up with some damage), I know what you mean on professional finish, even if the materials are not the best case, but the finish looks good and it doesn't bend too much then its the finger test on touch ability that is key.

Not all are going to have the touch-ability of say and Apple, or high end aluminum cased laptop, but good feel on the keys, ok finish on the case and no rough edges and that's ok./

On external ports, then its a crap shoot at times as expensive models may not have as many ports and low/mid range, less places to shoehorn stuff in due to larger components, but think of some pros and cons, so what are you going to plug in at once in the case of USB, would you be hooking a HDMI TV or monitor to it etc

A review from Australia on the Medion http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/medion/akoya_e6228_md98980_laptop/422923/ it is the Intel i3 version but besides the CPU the rest gets a good opinion. The battery life in the Pentium one you listed is a 7w so will use less battery than this i3.

Dont think ASDA have display models you can test as in just reboot and see how quick it starts, to how quick IE or Office opens, to opening Word and starting to type, is it laggy (another tech term) as I think its for the user to test, kind of like a car, no good me testing one for you to buy.

    I love technical terms ;)

Thought so on Office, and as for anti-malware I agree and thats a pitfall of OEM is that you do get apps you dont need so a bit of cleaning up and uninstalling takes up a fair chunk of the first day you use it, but worth it.

Worst thing is ASDA websites doesn't list Electricals a lot, especially if they have offers on some as its a "as soon as they re sold out they are gone thing"

If the ACER is like this one in Tesco's HERE and they tend to mirror offers, then I'd go for the Medion, on CPU.
The price for what you get in the spec list is good, cannot fault that.

I can't decide between the following two laptops. Any pros and cons with these.

ToshibaThis is a link to PC World, couldnt find it on Toshiba's site.

Acer. And this one doesn't appear on Acer's website.

    Hi Mark

Both the same in terms of CPU, RAM etc but the pro that the ACER has is an optical drive the Toshiba does not.

Difficult one, all would for me come down to how they felt, opening closing the lid, to the keyboard, trackpad feel, to how quick they booted and opened IE and Word, and allowed you to type. If both stores are close to you I'd go and play with them a little, but speed and power wise they are similar with the edge on battery life being the ACER, but then makes claims are always suspect (like MPG).

Let me know what you choose.

Thanks David. I don't like the Medion. It's between the Acer and Toshiba. I think the Acer will win. I can't remember why I got the idea Acer weren't good. But, thinking logically the current Acer laptop is working fine and it's at least 7 years old. I suppose it's going to be better the devil you know.

    Hi Mark

I think at times we all read a bad review or on a forum someone's bad experience and it sticks in the back of our minds, but like you I have an old ACER still going strong, its a Aspire 5630 which I gave to my mum and as she said it was a little slow I popped in and old SSD and added Tech Preview of Win 10 for her, adds a little more life to it, CPU is still slow and slower than the ones you are looking at.

Also remember you will get an free upgrade to Windows 10 once its released with you having a Win 8.1 machine (also Win7 users get the same, upgrade is valid for one year from release of Win10)

One thing also I forgot to mention is I also dont just look at the machine specs, price and build, but how easy their site is to find support updates and drivers, and ACER has always been good.

    Hi David

I think, subject to test drive, it’s going to be Acer.

I've just discovered a laptop buying guide here on Majorgeeks. It has generated another question. The Acer I'm most likely to buy has an Intel video card. The Majorgeeks laptop buyers' guide recommends avoiding Intel video cards. Based on my potential use should I still follow that advice and go for an ATI or Nvidia video card or stick with the Intel one?

    Hi Mark

To get an nVidia or Ati card your looking at laptops that will be £100/200+ more, the latest generation Intel HD Graphics are not too bad TBH, for what you are using the laptop for I'd stick with the Intel.

I suspected they might be dearer: as they guide so correctly says you get what you pay for. I'll stick with the Intel

Thank you! I was just really dotting the i's and crossing the t's. I didn't want to be setting myself up for future problems or disappointment thus the reason for double checking. I shall get, and be happy with, a laptop with an Intel video card.

If you can have a test of one that then seals the deal, as nothing better to kick the tires so to speak.

I do have to add my Surface Pro is an Intel i5 with 4GB ram and an SSD, so it is quicker than many desktops, but the Intel HD Graphics is good quality pic and runs good in games.

I bought an HP laptop. I now wish I followed my brother's advice an bought something made by Apple. Microsoft had to ruin what should've been an enjoyable experience. I was unable to set up this new laptop without giving Microsoft my life history. Well Microsoft think I'm called Donald Duck I won't say what email address I gave them. I'm not withholding it for security reasons; it doesn't exist. But, it's unprintable in polite company.

I don't know the name of the model I purchased. It doesn't have a name on the laptop itself, on the box it came in or on the accompanying documentation and there was no name next to it in the shop. The CPU is made by AMD. The RAM is 8 MB (or do I mean 8 GB?) and the HDD is 1 TB.

Sorry for the rant but annoyed that PC World were ready almost to hold me hostage because I refused to buy an extended warranty. Then they wanted my CV when it came to pay for it. Then Microsoft wanted to know everything except my blood group. I even had to enter a capctcha to ensure a human was setting the laptop up.

Label on the bottom of a laptop gives all the info as well as the Serial number to reinstall Windows.
Right it down because the heat and wear and tear of a laptop will obscure some of the information and you'll regret not writing it down when the laptop was new and the info was readable.

@DavidGP: I kicked the Acer's tyres. I wasn't overly impressed. It felt "cheap" the keys felt as if they'd easily break. Then I saw an HP within my budget. I recalled you saying HP were good. As this had 8 GB RAM and 1 TB HDD I went for it. It also had no pre-loaded OEM software, except a time-limited free subscription to a McAfee anti-virus software. I ran De-Crapifier and it reported finding nothing. I had to manually ask it to remove the McAfee software. It has the catchy name 15-g094sa and the full spec is here.
