Good Old Freezing

Got a machine here that's having freezing issues. Sometimes it'll freeze in the OS (XP sp2), sometimes it'll freeze on start up, sometimes it'll just totally freeze and there's nothing that can be done bar a power off.

Also sometimes the machine will boot and run properly, others it won't. Last known good configuration brings up the check disk blue screen to check for bad sectors, but at times this freezes too. The same with safe mode.

Now, with having some knowledge of the internals of the machines, i'm assuming this is more than likely down to one of two things, the PSU or the mobo.

Anyone got anything I can try before going for the dismantle and getting some new parts?

    Cheers.

    Greetings, Welsh.Baz, and welcome aboard.

PSU does sound like a likely culprit - what type of machine is it? If possible, supply us with the make and model #, include any Service Tag #s.

Or, download and run Speccy, a free system information tool.

When the scan completes, click 'File', 'Save as Text file', name the report, and save to an easily found location, such as your Desktop.

Be advised: the report will display your IP Address and Windows Product Key. You may delete this information if you so wish.

Then attach that file to your next post per these instructions: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post.

EDIT: Sorry, falconattack - didn't see you lurking there! ;)

Weather's warmer - so check your heatsink for the processor. Just had to give mine the big springclean - it was badly blocked up :-o

Well I gave it a bit of a clean inside and out, and then restored to a good working setup and all seems fine now. The fan heat was stupidly high before the clean out too, so thankfully it got sorted before it got to melting points :D

Talk about overthinking a problem - geez! :-o

Glad you found the simple fix, Welsh.Baz and whitegold, and thanks for the feedback. :major

Hmmmmmm Caliban, perhaps you should spend more time using good old Occam's faultfinder, rather than honing it to perfection ;)

(Sorry, couldn't resist that cheap shot):-D
