I'm not sure where do I post this one, sorry if it's in the wrong section.

My Firefox browsers all crash when I try to use Google Images. Going something like this.

    1. Google.
    2. Go to Google Images.
    3. Search for something on Google Images.
    4. If I try to click on anything on my search results (Search settings, images, new search, etc.), it crashes.

I've only half a guess that this problem might have started after I downloaded a Porcelain and Chalet font yesterday, but it was still working fine then. The problem only came today.

I just did a scan with ESET Online Scanner and it says nothing's wrong.

Any idea what might have caused this problem?

I checked through that one earlier. The thing I'm curious is why did it only happen now?

I've been sticking with FF 3.6.16 for a looong time. It's only chosen now to break down.

Gee, do you think it might fix if I reinstall Firefox 3? Or should I switch to FF4? The reason I haven't upgraded to 4 is because I don't exactly tend to trust it until I confirm it's established as safe and working.

    P.S.: Thanks for the moving.

The version of FF mentioned in that thread is 3.6.3 or older back in 2010 so I do not think that applies to you.

I'm running FF v4 and google images does not crash my browser, (XP SP3). What version of windows are you running?
I no longer have 3.6.16 installed anywhere to test but I do not remember it crashing.

If it crashes again, try uninstalling those two fonts, reboot and try again. If it doesn't crash, install one of the two fonts and test it again. If it is okay, install the 2nd font and see what happens.

Version 4 will take a bit of tweaking to get it to look like v3. I had to do quite a few things because I was uncomfortable with the look of v4.
Should you decide to install it and hate it, start a new thread on tweaking it and I will run through some things you can do to change the appearance.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

As a followup: I recently installed FF4 on this Win 7 SP1 64-bit machine, no problems at all.

If the fonts aren't the culprits, try FF Safe Mode (or with all add-ons disabled). If the symptoms change, then you may selectively enable the add-ons to find the potential cause of the crash.

Windows XP, Google Images only started crashing on me lately, never once in the last 8 years.

Will try handling the fonts to see for any changes.

Nope, definitely not the fonts, still crashed, Safe Mode crashed anyway.

If you've removed the suspect fonts and if Firefox crashes with no add-ons, then I guess the next step would be to uninstall/reinstall the program.

You mentioned 'Firefox browsers' - how many browsers are you running?

Ans, do the same symptoms present when using Internet Explorer?

Right, I'll get right on that. As for how many browsers, 3 Firefoxes (As in 3 of them, same type.). As far as I can remember, it didn't cause any problems to have that many on before.

And my Internet Explorer uses the old Google Images, so it doesn't seem to run into any problems.

Could you expand on this please?

There's a difference in the Google Images sites between Firefox and IE?

    Hi

What Service Pack is your Windows XP at?

What security applications do you haev installed and please name all of them?

The version of Firefox you are using is old as mentioned and will need updating, also do you have the latest Adobe Flash for Alternate browsers installed? Its HERE if not and also install the IE version HERE also.

Also if you start Firefox in its Safe Mode do you get the same issue?

If you use Internet Explorer does Google Images work ok?

The older Google Images, Google Images can (or could) switch between the old version and new version of Google Images, my Internet Explorer defaults to the old one apparently. That one seems to work okay.

    Firefox 3.6.16

    Service Pack 3.

    Security Applications:
    AVG8.5 Free.

Safe Mode also cannot use Google Images.

OK, let's take a deeper look then. Open up a new thread in malware removal after you have run the procedures and attach all of the requested logs.

By the way, does anyone know what does this mean?

The contents of the crash report.

I'll take a rough guess and say it looks like it might be a crash dump from FX where Java Quick Starter was loaded.

    The first addon
    is AVG safe search
    Second is java
This is what I found for the last item:

I realize this is a different build of version 3 than you are using.

First you can try turning off AVG's safe search. Reboot and then try google images again. If FF doesn't crash, that is the culprit. If it crashes, turn Safe Search back on.

Second, in the {97...} folder, see if you have a file "install.rfd" inside.
If so, temporarily move it to your desktop. Reboot, fire up FF and try another google search. If it doesn't crash, then that might be the problem. Just to play it safe, I'd let that file on the desktop for a few days to be sure nothing breaks in FF. If it seems to be working okay after several days, I'd delete it or move it to a USB stick in a folder with a note what it was and where it was located.

I'll keep that in mind and test it.

I'll check going with AVG SafeSearch first.

It would be helpful to know if the recent changes in Google's new search routines and Google's being much more interactive with your computer (Not a good thing in my view), had any relationship to these crashes.

My Firefox crashes with Google Images seemed to start when Google began their more interactive routines. For my part, I dislike Google's images acting like pop-ups every time I mouse over them.

With a somewhat slow internet connection, this hangs my whole system until the java script 324 fails and the pop-up window asking me if I want to stop it comes up.

These suggest that it is Google at least as much as Firefox. It is doubly bothersome, making me distrust Google, when it becomes so difficult to opt back to the classic search system, which does seem to avoid these crashes.

My $.02 from a non-geek. Input from the real geeks is awaited.

Windows XP - Firefox : Start Firefox in safe mode - Remove programs AVG security, and AVG Rootkits programs. Go to AVG site and choose AVG 2011 system program, even 2011 AVG Free download - You do not have to choose the advanced system. Complete the download and you are now Golden with images on Google -
