I found two files in my Program Files I'm wondering about. I tried Googling them and found nothing.
    GUM5136.tmp and GUT5137.tmp.

Are these files Google put there or do I have an infection?
I believe if they are legit I can just delete them.

*.tmp files are temporary files. They shouldn't really be in the Program Files folder. I just searched both Program Files folders (Windows XP and 7), found more than 26,000 files of which 2 are 0 byte *.tmp files. Programs like CCleaner will find and delete *.tmp files.

Try changing the file extension of a small (one or two megabytes) know executable file (.exe) to a text (.txt) file and choose to open it with notepad. If you have need of the file don't make any changes and change the extension back to .exe. I tried your suggestions and then tried GUM.tmp on startpage.
