    Hello,

    On Monday the 9th, 2012 around 8:45 pm, I started to get the "Windows XP Recovery Virus". Luckily, after quite awhile, I was able to get that taken care of. Hours later, I was hit with "Google Redirect Virus". After following many instructions and fighting off the FIRST virus coming back, I was able to complete the tasks put forth on this site.

    Symptoms of the "Google Redirect" are as follows:

    (Only in Firefox and IE 8)
    Easily repeatable.
    Just type "windows update" in google. Click on Microsoft's link (confirm the link below) and it redirects every time.

    This does not happen with Chrome which I installed after I got the redirect virus.

    Other symptoms:

    Multiple instances of "chrome.exe, iexplore.exe, and svchost.exe" in task manager.

    After following every direction on this site, the only thing that wouldn't work was "RootRepeal".

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Attached are my logs.

    There is possibly a DNS infection at play here which is causing the redirects, but you also had a couple of infected files which combofix claimed it has healed but there is one more which needs replacing that is still infected. So we will deal with this first.

    Now we need to use ComboFix by sUBs

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Fcopy::
    C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\explorer.exe | c:\windows\explorer.exe

    DirLook::
    C:\F012A
    C:\Fonts

    Folder::
    c:\program files\2AB28
    c:\documents and settings\D~\Application Data\Mutoycr
    c:\documents and settings\D~\Application Data\Aqazp

    File::
    c:\program files\Windows NT\8F74D.exe
    c:\windows\winstart.bat
    C:\Documents and Settings\D~\Local Settings\Application Data\9e02a73b
    C:\Documents and Settings\D~\2dbf~1
    C:\Documents and Settings\D~\Application Data\fcde2015
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\bekoaaa.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\jgtoaaa.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\D~\Templates\2229bf22
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Application Data\5b6dd491

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{CF739809-1C6C-47C0-85B9-569DBB141420}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{CF739809-1C6C-47C0-85B9-569DBB141420}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    • Has the redirection now stopped?

    Not likely. At least not with having a PC that you can consider reliable/trustworthy afterwards. You could attempt to clean it, but it is very difficult to locate ALL infected executables and odds are high that as you run scans to try to clean the problems, that you will be spreading it to more files. You know the standard boilerplate for these kind of PE file infectors! ;)

    I thought as much. :(

    @ drexdamack
    These typed infections have really become quite nasty and dangerous. We could attempt to remove it, and we have had some success in the past, but recently it has become even more troublesome to remove. It is really safer to just bite the bullet and do a clean reinstall.

    The problem is that the damage caused by this infection really makes a PC unreliable/untrustworthy. PE file infectors like Ramnit, Virut,.... etc can infect all executable files (DLL, EXE, SCR....and many more and also HTML). These infections can open back doors that truly may compromise your computer and your security. These backdoors could allow a remote attacker to access and instruct the infected computer to download and execute more malicious files.

    In many cases the infected files (which could number in the thousands) cannot be disinfected properly by your anti-virus or by other scanning tools. Also when disinfection is attempted, the files often become corrupted and the system may become unstable or irrepairable. The longer Ramnit remains on a computer, the more files it may infect and/or corrupt so the degree of infection can vary.

    Ramnit is commonly spread via a flash drive (usb, pen, thumb, jump) infection where it copies the Ramnit worm using a random file name. The infection is often contracted by visiting remote, crack and keygen sites. These type of sites are a major source of system infection.

    I had a feeling it was going to come down to the extreme this time. A few questions before I go:

    1. Do I have to format and start from scratch, or can the repair windows function on the disk work?

    2. If I do have to format, can I back up pics/videos/music etc., or is everything a risk to future installs?

    3. Do I need to wipe all of my hard drives?

    4. Would it be safe to buy a new hard drive, install Windows on the new one and use this as a secondary? Wiping the "Windows, Program Files, and AppData" folders?

    5. Can you suggest any free virus and/or firewall software?

    I really appreciate your help. You guys are the best!

    It has to be done from scratch, properly, yes.

    Pictures are okay, but as explained, video's cannot be saved.
    If there are executables on there then it would be wise to yes.

    No, just wipe the main one.
    I like to use Avast free edition.
    From Chas and I, you are welcome. :)
