Google redirect - Hapili and others

I am helping a friend out with an XP machine that is being redirected to various websites, hapili, 63.209.69.107, getanswersfast, etc. Not all the time, just sometimes and it seems to occur in Firefox and Chrome. Unfortunately, I did not follow all steps listed for redirects and the read and run steps in order as usually Malwarebytes, tdsskiller, Ccleaner and/or combofix usually take care of the redirect issues. So I'm attaching the log from the first run of malwarebytes and the only run I did of combofix. Of note is apparently Combofix ran through the stages very quickly according to the person I had standing by to respond to it, not sure why. Superantispyware logs are missing (I believe an upgrade deleted them) so I ran it again. Also ran the MBRcheck and Gooredfix and MGtools. I am doing this remotely but can get my hands on the machine if need be. I also did not reset the router as I did not want to cause a commotion in the household. I can probably do that remotely as well if need be but not using the reset button but by signing on to it and restoring factory settings. So I apologize for running things out of order, hopefully that did not cause a major problem and this can be resolved.

    Uninstall these outdated Java.
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Now we need to use ComboFix by sUBs

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    Viewpoint Manager Service
    Folder::
    c:\program files\Viewpoint
    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Nicole PC\Local Settings\Application Data\7y6774w28t81a
    C:\Documents and Settings\Nicole PC\Templates\7y6774w28t81a
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Thank you for your help. I've attached the two logs. The machine is still being redirected to at least Hapili some of the time.

    Which browser is redirecting?

Apologies - I thought I posted that. Both Chrome and Firefox are redirecting. Chrome more so. Never really tried IE but seemed better than the others. Chrome almost half the time, Firefox only 20 percent or so..

You need to try Internet Explorer and let me know what is occuring there!

In the mean time, if Chrome and Firefox are redirecting then you will need to back up your settings and uninstall them.

    Back up your Chrome settings.

    Here are instructions for Firefox:

We are going to be uninstalling your old version of FireFox and installing the new version. So do the below to save bookmarks:

    • Run FireFox and click Bookmarks.
    • Then select Organize Bootmarks.
    • Then on the next window click File and then select Export. Save the bookmarks.html file to your Desktop for later use in importing.

Now download and save the installer for the current version of FireFox but DO NOT install it yet. Get it here: Mozilla FireFox

You will need to exit FireFox now and use Internet Explorer to continue with the below until we reinstall FireFox.

Start by uninstalling FireFox and then reboot. Do not skip the reboot.
After reboot, delete the below folders:
    • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    • C:\documents and settings\UserAccount\Application Data\Mozilla

where UserAccount is the actual user account name being used.

Now reinstall FireFox from the file previously downloaded.
Import your bookmarks file. (similar process to exporting).

Now surf around a while and let me know if the redirects are still happening or not.

Hi - it appears IE does not have an issue. I followed the instructions for both Chrome and Firefox, uninstalling, rebooting, removing the application data folders and re-installing. Firefox seems okay right now, Chrome is still re-directing.

Then I am guessing that it was not uninstalled properly.

Follow these instructions to remove it again properly.

Manually uninstall Google Chrome in Windows

Now you should not be experiencing redirects in Chrome after that.

Well it seems to be better now. I will have my friend keep an eye on it but after 20 clicks or so I saw no re-directions. Thank you.

Ready for final steps? If so.... :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I will take care of this once my friend gets back on it again. But it seemed good to me so you can close this ticket, thank you very much for your help.
