Yet another case of this annoying virus... my friend's been infected. He's followed the read&run and google redirect topics, and still has this. Logs attached. Thanks

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\RegCure.job
    C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\RegCure Program Check.job
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kgpcpy.cfg
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kgpfr2.cfg
    C:\Documents and Settings\MEGAMAN\Local Settings\Application Data\405a481v1p73r00sd4854fqwg0637xef60j3i2n5xlhy
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\405a481v1p73r00sd4854fqwg0637xef60j3i2n5xlhy
    C:\Documents and Settings\MEGAMAN\Templates\405a481v1p73r00sd4854fqwg0637xef60j3i2n5xlhy

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\STOPzilla!
    c:\program files\Common Files\iS3

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost]
    "itlsvc"=-
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{171DEBEB-C3D4-40b7-AC73-056A5EBA4A7E}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    SystemLook

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
    Download Mirror #1
    Download Mirror #2

    • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
    • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
      Code:
      :filefind
      wscntfy*
    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    New logs attached.
Ran into a combofix log problem ... after cfscript->combofix and combofix ran, there was no c:\combofix.txt
    however there was a qoobox\combofix2.txt
but I told him to re-run combofix normally after everything else ran. new combofix scan log attached instead.

    thanks

    Still being redirected??

Combofix reports a missing c:\windows\System32\wscntfy.exe so perhaps you could run the below to try and replace it. (Not a malware problem)

    Running SFC Scannow

    Thanks
I don't think he's getting redirected now (maybe a popup or two)
but now he has problems with .exe files
They're taking forever to open and hanging. The process is visible in task manager but the program won't run. His theme also reset to win 98 style and no browsers will open (they crash upon opening). This all happened a day after he last used combofix, which is kind of weird. He can't run sfc /scannow because he doesn't have an xp disc with him.

edit: he's still getting redirected. he can open browsers now but nothing loads.

Just a coincidence. CF did not remove anything of importance, just a load of garbage.

Does your friend use a router?

  9. rymd

    rymd Private E-2

Yes, he does. Should he try reseting it? I told him to reset it per the instructions in the sticky, but I'm not sure if he actually did it.

It very well could be his router! There is a little button on the bottom ( on most models ) to reset it to factory settings. Make sure you reset to defaults and not just a soft reset!! Do that. You may then need to go back into it to set any special setting that you may have set up originally. But do that first and see if that doesn't take care of it.

You can test this theory by connecting directly to your modem and if the redirects stop, then you know it is the router that is infected.

Well, he's reset his router, sfc /scannow'd 3 times (if sfc works the first time, are you supposed to be able to use it again? o.o), and tried the broken exe association registry fix...
    still redirects
    still .exe opening problems

    anything else he can try?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You need to use your Windows XP CD to boot to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr to clear a Master Boot Record infection that you have.

You can read the below to help you do this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

After running the fixmbr command then boot back to normal mode Windows and try running TDSSkiller now. Then attach the log. Also explain if you are still having any malware problems.

Done, TDSSKiller log attached (nothing found)

first reports: exe files are opening up immediately. good sign :)

    Do the redirects persist?

So far, so good. He's been google-surfing for a while, and no problems. Hopefully, all is now well, and he's installed Avast.
    thanks for all your help!

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
