Periodically when boot up in the morning my comp will totally freeze just after desktop loads. Cursor and hourglass is in middle of page and nothing will move until I remove power from comp (on/off sw won't work). Does this when I have peripherals disabled too. No probs after comp totally boots. However, when I downpower I still have a window (momentarily) that says something about USR problem (evidently modem I don't use). This window pops up every downpower. Not concerned with the modem thing unless it relates to the freezeup. You prob need more info than the following, but this is a start

    Dell 4600
    XP home
    512 meg ram.
    Mozilla Firefox browser
    various firewalls/cleaners/AV
    cable broadband service
    80 gig hd dr
    2.4 gig proc.

When say freezing, do you mean there is an hourglass when moving the mouse over the start button?

It does sound like some sort of hardware conflict issue...I'd definitely look into the modem issue & see if it can be resolved, just to see if it makes the difference.

When did this start happening? If it's recent, you may want to consider a system restore to fix it.

i'd also see what all is starting up, and/or disable some of them? check start --> programs --> startup, as well as msconfig. but, be careful with msconfig, as you could accidentally disable something there that another application needs to operate properly. i'm not sure what the removing the power cord has to do with it?, so i'm assuming it's a laptop?

my newest home computer, seems to freeze up on startup, once the desktop comes up, but it just takes a bit for the stuff to load up, firewall, antivirus etc.
