Ok, I have AVG Antivirus, the free version. It has told me that it found and deleted a trojan on my computer called, Downloader.Adroar.A However when I surf the web I still get these stupid pop up ads which I should not be getting because I have Google Taskbar installed. Also, I didn't open any emails with attatchments so I am wondering How I got this thing?? I need to know how to delete it and ways to prevent from getting another one..thank you!

I just removed this from my puter yesterday. This trojan hides in system restore and will crop up everytime you restart. Disable system restore and restart. Run AVG again and it will put the trojan in the virus vault, where you can then delete it. Restart and re-enable system restore. At this point I also went into system restore and manually created a restore point. That'll kill this critter. I could find no info on where I picked this up either.

      • You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the System Restore tab will not be displayed. If you do not know how to log in as Administrator, contact your system administrator (if you are on a network), the computer manufacturer, or installer.
      • Turning off System Restore will delete all previous restore points. You must create new restore points once you turn System Restore back on.
To turn off Windows XP System Restore
    1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
    2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box as shown in this illustration:

    5. Click Apply. The following message appears:

    6. As noted in the message, this will delete all existing restore points. Click Yes to do this.
    7. Click OK.
    8. Proceed with what you need to do. For example, removing viruses. Restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.
To turn on Windows XP System Restore
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box.
    5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will create regular backups of selected system files and program files. For more information, read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article, How to: Restore Windows XP to a Previous State, Q306084.

Hello again, Ad-Aware question now. Once I use ad-aware and it "removes" the files. Do I sitll need to delete them where they are quarintined??

I would, I always do. Although the files are basically harmless while in quarantine, they are still in the computer (that's my paranoia speaking) and I do not like that. The only time that I will leave something in quarantine is if I think it might possibly be a file that is necessary. Then I'll run the puter for awhile and if all is ok I delete them. I have come to trust AdAware's judgement pretty well. BTW, don't forget to re-enable system restore after you are done. ;)

Ok I will remember to re-enable System Restore. One question though, I deleted the trojan from the vault before I did the re-boot with the system restore and ran it again once re-booted and AVG did not pick it up. Is it gone now?? I seem to not be having any problems. Was this a bad idea??
