Ok, I've been trying to remove this malware and I've had no luck so far. Here are the programs that I've run so far in Safe mode.

MalwareBytes- (Did a full scan, couldn't detect Windows Recovery though)
    Spybot Search and Destroy
    Trojan Killer

I ran all three of these and not a single one was able to remove Windows Recovery. All my icons are missing and I'm currently running my computer in Safe mode with networking. What do I now? How can I remove it for good?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

I dont understand what your asking me to do.. The virus is causing my icons to vanish, and strange audio keeps playing on my screen. No programs are open but yet the music keeps playing. I dont know whats going on. The windows recovery is still intact and I need to remove it.. Malware bytes didnt work. I scanned four times.

  4. xhayatox

It also keeps making Internet explorer pop up occasionally with ads, and that music that I Just talked about.. Guess what? I had no programs open on my screen. I went to task manager>processes, and i.explorer.exe was secretly open and it was playing music from there. How is this happening?! Is this windows recovery really causing this to happen

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
    1. Rkill.exe
    2. Rkill.com
    3. Rkill.scr
    4. Rkill.pif
Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then double click on it to run it.

    AVPFind.bat

It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt file that is will hopefully create as long as the malware does not block the batch file from running. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Now download and Run exeHelper
    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
    • Attach the log.txt file to your next message.
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Also please try running the below online scan:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. See if you can save a log with it.

Then try running these instructions: Using MGtools

Attach the below logs when finished with all of the above:
    • C:\avplog.txt - from AVPfind
    • a log from online SAS scan if you could make one
    • log.txt - from exeHelper
    • C:\MGlogs.zip - from MGtools
The C:\ assumes that drive C is you Windows boot drive. If you boot from another drive, then use the correct drive letter above.

I know you are frustrated, but there is absolutely NO NEED for obscenities even if you do try and filter it out using asterisks. This is a forum aimed at all age ranges so take this as a warning. Also do not include strange links in your posts please.

Now let's try this tool and see if it will get us anywhere at all.

Please download RogueKiller.exe and save it to your desktop.
    • Now quit all running programs.
    • Double click RogueKiller.exe to run it.
    • When prompted, type 1 and hit Enter.
    • A RKreport.txt should appear on your desktop.
    • Note: If the program is blocked, do not hesitate to try several times. If it really does not work (it could happen), rename it to winlogon.exe .
    • Please post the contents of the RKreport.txt in your next Reply.

And if that does not work then you need to tell me EXACTLY which of the below you were/were not able to run in either normal/safe modes.

    • SUPERantispyware
    • RootRepeal
    • Combofix
    • MGTools

OK. Now address my post # 9. See what you are able to run. Let me know.

  12. Kestrel13!

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

After answering that, tell me if you are able to run this:

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Am I supposed to download all four of those? You never mentioned them earlier so I'm confused. Sorry. If yes, please tell me which exactly I should download :).

I mentioned them in my post # 2 ;) Yes, I want you to work your way through those steps in post # 2, see how far you get and attach what logs you have.

And then see if TDSSKIller will run too.

Ok im currently working on the "READ & RUN ME GUIDE".. I'm on step 5. But this is odd. None of the steps mention

    SUPERantispyware
    RootRepeal
    Combofix
    MGTools

Am i doing something wrong? I just ran CCleaner, cleared everything. Downloaded Frogger, disabled my CD drive thingy and suddenly fifty different icons appeared on my desktop. Then I checked my add/remove but I didn't have any "Viewpoint managers". I cleared my recycle bin. I unhid all my folders. (Speaking of which, this virus concealed every single file on my computer except the recycle bin.) Then I changed Msconfig to Normal.

Why do I have the feeling I'm doing something wrong? The guide never mentioned any of those programs so.. Was I supposed to do something else?

The guide does mention it all. Just keep going.

Oh, and I may I mention.. I downloaded the tsdsskiller.zip. I extracted the contents onto my desktop. I am able to run the .exe smoothly, but when I try to run it by right clicking> administrator, I'm unable to do it that way. I can run it regularly but I cannot run it with the administrator option. When I run it with the administrator option, here's the error I get.

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an assocation in the set associations control panel."

As you can see, my computer is absolutely fried. I have so much trouble running files now it's ridiculous. What should I do at this point? Simply run tdsskiller normally?

OK, now on with the rest (Yes, all the relevant information covering the tools I want you to download and run is in the post I keep mentioning so just take your time, you will get there in the end)

Sounds great i'm on it! By the way, was this supposed to happen after executing deFrogger? After I clicked disable, it restarted my computer and after reboot, a bunch of album cover thumbnails from music I have automatically spawned on my desktop. Was that supposed to happen? lol.

  22. Kestrel13!

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

I think that's due to hidden files showing whilst we work through the procedures.

  23. xhayatox

    xhayatox Private First Class

Oh right makes sense. I also wish to point something else out. Usually upon startup, the Windows Recovery boots on my screen and I have to manually shut it down via Task Manager. After rebooting it twice it hasn't popped up yet but the icon of the program is clearly visible on my desktop. I've tried deleting it but it keeps coming back. I guess the virus is still quite intact huh?

    Ok sorry one problem though.

    I have downloaded everything except
    RootRepeal

I'm running vista on a 64-bit but the guide says

RootRepeal - do not download or run on 64 bit systems.

    Do i skip that?

I've successfully scanned my computer with SAS, and it generated a .log file but I can't seem to access it. I'm trying to click 'View Log' but nothing is popping up. Are the logs saved in a directory on my computer perhaps? Is there another way I can get to them? This is ridiculous.

The logs from running all of the requested scans are found here:
    • C:\Users\<insert your user account name>\AppData\Roaming\SUPERAntiSpyware.com\SUPERAntiSpyware\Logs
    • C:\Users\<insert your user account name>\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs
    • C:\MGlogs.zip <--- will also include any others
You should attach ALL of your logs to one message after you have completed all scans.

None of it is riduculous. You got yourself infected now you have to help yourself get clean.

I scanned with MGtools and it created a .zip with a bunch of logs. Should I be uploading that entire zip?
Also, I finished scanning with everything else. Should I use 'defrogger' and 're-enable' the drivers?

Looks like we have a bit more to do yet.

    Uninstall the below outdated Java.
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 24
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know if things are still running well for you.

Re-download MGTools.exe and run it, attach the C:\MGLogs.zip, perform only the steps given to you.

Wow quit crying over something as trivial as a few cuss words. I highly doubt ten year olds are going to be browsing this forum trying to figure out how to fix their computer, and I can assure you the majority of the people using the internet are aware of each and every bit of profanity that exists. Whats the big deal? We're all grown ups here. Unless this website was designed for toddlers, there should be no limitations on language.
