I have an Asus M2A-VM motherboard with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ CPU. I recently had to do a complete format and reinstall of Windows XP Pro SP3, AGAIN.:cry While installing the motherboard drivers I got a Realtek install failed error message. I never got this message before when installing the drivers. I install the drivers right after installing Windows so there is nothing getting in the way of the install, that I know of. I have called Asus Tech Support, they are a snotty lot, and they were no help at all. The puzzling part is that I am getting audio from some programs/websites, but most Windows functions, nada. I went to Realtek's website but every time I tried to download the new drivers I got a "Cannot Display This Page" error message, on all 6 download sites! I would appreciate all the help I can get. :)

I already tried these and they did not work. The only Yellow ! marks I get are not known and this program will not let me attach a screen shot because it was used in another question I have and unfortunately I am unable to insert the image. Due to the Forum limitations. rolleyes

I went to Tom's Hardware and read the posts in the forum. Their problem is very similar to mine. I tried to post a reply/join the forum, unfortunately I was unable to get their forum to set me up. Their Loading symbol stayed active for aroung a half hour before I shut the site down. They offered no help though. :(

    Old-Navy,

I only linked to the other thread to show that a fix for the problem had already been found as for the sound driver, and it did reference the MG thread. I, in no way, meant for you to join the website and am sorry if that it how you interpreted it.

Realize that you have already posted a screen shot of your Device Manager and can't repost it due to limitations. But the fact that you can hear some sounds makes me think that you already have some sound driver working in at least a limited capacity.

In Device Manager does it show that you have a network adapter installed? And what does it show under Sound and Video controllers?

Only asking in that Halo's advice of installing the chipset drivers should have corrected the problem. :)

Under Network adapters I have a Realtek RTL8168/8111 Gigabit Ethernet NIC. Under Sound, video and game controllers I have (deep breath): Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture Devices, Media Control Devices, Realtek High Definition Audio, Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device, and last but not least Video Codecs.

I notice that the Realtek HD Audio is installed, which I don't understand since it said that the installation failed! If the Realtek drivers are installed why am I not getting audio from everything? :confused This is getting weirder and weirder.

    Old-Navy,

Please go back and read the entire thread that I first linked to! Even though the thread's heading doesn't match your problem per se, I believe that the solution to your problem is contained within it, if it is read in its entirety. This thread is also mentioned in the Tom's Hardware link that I provided, http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=146855.

I believe the reason you are having problems with Window's sounds is that the driver isn't installed correctly, and the thread also mentions unknown devices which you also have and what removed them.

Thanks for all your help Novice. I finally bit the bullet and formatted my HDD, installed Windows and then the motherboard drivers. It took 2 tries, but I was finally able to install the Realtek HD Audio drivers. I now have sound from every thing. :-D

Thanks for the help on this topic - It helped me solve an almost identical issue with issues attempting to install the Realtek HD Audio driver on an ECS board.

One additional tip I discovered through trial and error while installing from the ECS Driver CD that may help others with similar issues:

While InstallShield is installing the HD Audio Drivers, the "Found New Hardware" window may pop up in XP and ask if you want to install the drivers automatically or from a specific location. Ignore the "Found New Hardware" message and do not click anything in it. As InstallShield continues, the "Found New Hardware" window will close automatically. (In my case, clicking anything in the XP "Found New Hardware" message while InstallShield was running trashed the install attempt)

When InstallShield finished, the quick launch icons were in place along with an XP balloon stating "There was a problem with installation..." After rebooting (which is not prompted for at the end of InstallShield), the HD Audio worked perfectly.
