    *insert sarcastic eyeroll*

So my daughter has an iPhone 7 that just stopped working all of the sudden. To make a long dramatic story (she is 19 after all...lol) short, it turns out it is a known hardware failure that Apple is repairing for free (https://www.apple.com/support/iphone-7-no-service/). Good news, right? Nope.

She takes it to the 'Geniuses' at the apple store, where they tell her that it has to be sent in. The one (and pretty much only) good thing that happened was they gave her a loaner phone. They told her the repair would be done there and sent back. She's happy, but that was short lived...

She gets a call a week or so later and is told that she will either have to pay some stupid amount of money ($350 or so) to repair it, or she had the option of paying $500+ for a replacement. My daughter is not actually a shrinking violet in any sense of the word so let them know that, no, this was a free fix as per both verizon and the apple guy she took the phone to. They informed her that they would not be doing that. They couldn't tell her why but it was clear that she had 'tampered' with the phone. Now, she is a typical 19 year old college student who would literally have no clue how to even start to 'tamper' with her phone much less alter it in any way, so she told them so. They started in on 'third party' people tampering with her phone at that point. She informed them at that point that she had only ever taken her phone for repair to an apple store who repaired her screen...which they have a record of. All this is true. She doesn't have money other than what I give her so I know every little thing that goes wrong with her electronics...at length...dramatically... whether I want to or not.

In the mist of all that, they actually informed her, that they couldn't tell her exactly what was wrong and why they couldn't fix it because it was 'a security issue'.

Apple continues to be boorish and refuse to believe her. She then authorizes my husband to speak for her.

Fast forward about 5 days, ridiculous phone tag, many messages, no actual answering the phone number that was given, a phone re-sent to Apple 'engineering' for another evaluation, more claims that they couldn't state exactly why they wouldn't fix the problem as they should...they were very sorry about that, and then passing the issue back to the store guy.

Luckily, in spite of all this ridiculousness, my husband is actually incredibly good at this crap and basically stays calm and at the same time allows them to come to the conclusion that he is not going away and if they do not stand by their product, he would like to be directed to their corporate legal department. (I would have lost it in about the first 5 minutes and gotten absolutely nothing.)

My daughter has since been instructed to deny the repair/replacement, which will allow her phone to be sent back to the local Apple store, where we have been told she will receive a replacement. This was explained by the store person. I guess we will see. The only reason for even this is because of unrelenting persistence on my husbands part.

The most disgusting part about all this is that this a hardware failure on Apple's part that they have publicly said they will rectify. Little do people know that all you have to do is search online for 'Apple falsely accused me of tampering with my iphone' and you will get the true story. No one would post online asking for advice in dealing with a company falsely accusing them....just as I know for a fact that my daughter never touched her phone and would never dream of going to anywhere but apple to have it fixed. It is quite clear by all these online posts, that Apple is doing anything possible to get out of fixing their devices.

If you are going to put tamper proof things in your devices, you better make sure they are infallible. And I'm sorry, but even for those trying to save money and having the screen repaired by a third party, that should have zero bearing on an unrelated hardware malfunction that you have publicly owned up to and said you would repair...for free.

Hey Laura, the company I work for changed from Blackberries to iPhones many years ago and our experience is similar. The company has several sales reps and managers in each state and our mobile phones don't always get the best treatment although they are not generally abused. We change our phones every 2 years and if we ever had a problem with the Blackberries they just took ours and gave us a replacement. Apple on the other hand always say that either the moisture detector has been triggered or it has supposedly been dropped causing unseen internal damage and both these things void any warranty. One of the phones that had supposedly been exposed to moisture had a faulty charging connector and something inside had a physical problem preventing the plug connecting and they used the moisture clause to deny replacement. We bought another phone and when I dissassembled the old phone found it had a faulty power socket that had been soldered misaligned from new and the constant plugging and unplugging slightly out of alignment had worn the end connection finger. This was a straight example of Apple dodging their responsibility so now we have a new policy. When last year the CEO dropped a box file on his iphone 8 and cracked the screen, the Apple quote came back at AU$260 plus 10% GST(Goods and Services Tax). A replacement phone was AU$900 so I took the phone to a Chinese non genuine phone repairer and had a new non genuine screen fitted for AU$125 total cost. So far the repair has been good so then I took the phone with the faulty socket and they fixed that for AU$75 and now we have a spare phone. Previously Apple advised to replace the phone with the faulty socket as being uneconomical to repair :mad::mad:
The lesson here is we take new phones or ipads that are faulty to Apple first but if they start to stuff us around or won't replace/repair the item then I stop the proceedings and go to my new Chinese phone repair buddies and save a fortune and they repair the item on the spot while you wait.
Personally if I had my way the company would have Samsung Galaxy phones but the CEO is a fan of Apple so I do what I am told

Good luck dealing with Apple at least over here we have very strong consumer law so Apple have to repair/replace under warranty or find/invent some proof that we damaged the phone somehow but it seems they nit pick the smallest details eg the water indicator (that BTW can be triggered by steam in a bathroom or kitchen) whether they are relevant to the fault or not to avoid claims

Yep. Sounds like the exact same issue. I’d think companies would have more power over what is considered an ok excuse to get out of fixing the devices.

I stand by my opinion that I despise Apple as a company.

Over here Apple avoid paying taxes by saying they are administered by their international head office in Ireland and they tried to bluff the government saying as an international company they are not obliged to follow Australian consumer law. The government was very swift when it told them if they want to do business here then they have to follow the rules.
One good thing about Australian consumer protection is that warranties are irrelevant because here is an example. Say you buy a brand new fridge and it comes with a 12 month warranty and the fridge breaks 3 years later, so you think you are screwed but this is not the case. Written into our consumer protection is a clause that basically says any product that is for sale must be fit for purpose. In the fridge example this means that when most people buy a fridge they expect it to last 8 to 10 years and so to meet the buyers expectation fridges should be designed appropriately to last this time. So even though the fridge failed after 3 years the expectation is it would last at least 8 years so the manufacturer and the seller still have to either repair or replace the fridge or face huge government fines. This worked for me when my Hisense 65" TV failed after 14 months and it only had a 12 month warranty......long story short I got a new TV at 14 months and another replacement 2 years later when it failed again with the same fault. When Hisense replaced it the second time the original model was no longer available so they gave me a current model.
When I upgraded to a 4k Samsung 75" a year or two ago, I gave the Hisense to my son and it is still working.

So back to Apple....what they now do to avoid Australian consumer law is first and foremost inform the owner of the device that it is there fault the device is not working because it has been dropped, or had liquid spilled on it or has been tampered with and this gives them the right to not honour the warranty. Even though an iphone only has a 12 month warranty over here if one fails and it is out of warranty but it is less than 3 years old the phone owner is still protected as mobile phones can reasonably be expected to last 3 years. The only out for Apple is saying the owner damaged, abused or tampered with the phone so this is the line they take to resolve the matter to their advantage..........lets face it they're only a small start up and they have to make some profit.....and don't they make a profit :mad::mad:

I am with you Laura +1 despise Apple ........ I recently retired and the first thing I did is ditch my iphone 8 and ipad and replace them with a Samsung Galaxy S8 and a Galaxy Tab A. Never been happier and the battery life is much better

Geez what a nightmare and in part why I will not do Apple products at present, yes great design but if stuff goes wrong the "genius" store is a tad over ambicious a title, as really your daughter had 'a security issue' then cannot sya what, its a seciruty issue, which in normal terms is "we have no bloody clue"

Wouldnt be suprised if Palle say installing a non apple app is 3rd party! to not pay..

Great on Vic getting involved as calm but forceful is the way.

I have had Apple iPhones in past just gave up as updates not bombproof and more often that no had to rest to factory, so went ot Windows Phone, still have a 950 I use as spare and main is a XZ1 from Sony and Android and been perfect.

Correct me if I am wrong but in the USA if you jailbreak an Apple product and install non Apple apps you CAN be prosecuted because they treat the EULA as a binding contract on use of the device.:mad::mad:
In Australia currently this is unenforceable because it would be like buying a new car and needing to get a key cut and being prevented from a third party cutting the key. Another thing car makers can't dishonour their warranty on a new car if you don't use their dealer network for getting your car serviced as consumer law here protects the buyer against monopolies:cool:

I have never been a fan of Apple. It astounds me that 3/4 of family and friends think they can't do without their IPhone or IPad. They turn their noses up to Android. They are convinced they can do all kinds of things non Apple users can't do.

It is not only the iPhone and iPad. They also ruined their macOS platform. Starting with last years macOS release (10.13 High Sierra) nearly all my Mac software is no longer working

An attempt to start any program from the Final Cut or Logic Pro Studio suite will prompt you to buy a new version in the AppStore. The programs of Adobe Creative Suite CS 5.5 are running highly unstable and crashing randomly.

No doubt about it. If there isn't already, there should be classes in college/university just on Apple marketing alone. I do feel like the Android market has cut in to that a lot though.

In the name of full disclosure :p ...I do have an iPhone. I had a windows phone which I loved, and would still have, but no one supports their apps....particularly the ones I use like my bank and Waze. I got sick of seeing the message that they were sorry but support will no longer be offered.

My daughter did actually get her phone replacement. After the huge run around, they actually did the right thing. The problem is that they did everything they could to do the wrong, dishonest thing which I would imagine is what is going on with a lot of the apple consumers out there who think their devices are covered when it comes to manufacturer defects.

Android supports Waze - I have it on my phone.
And most banking apps support Android.

Sorry to hear about your daughter's phone.

    I don't like apple products.

People talk about their high quality. But when it comes down to it.It's pretty much the same as microsoft POS phones.Highly over priced repair bills, and the fact is that their quality really isn’t that high.

If you look at an android phone.Compared to microsoft or apple phones. You will see android is way more reliable then microsoft and apple phone.I have had only one android phone completely die on me with in the last 15 years of using android product.I have dropped my phones from high distance multiple times and they still worked after the fact.If you take a apple or microsoft phone and drop it.The screen will crack instantly. And your phone is now junk. With android phones you still will be able to use the phone. Most android phone's now have a thick screen.

A lot of phones related to apple or microsoft has very little support in there phones.compare that to an android phone.Tons of support and features.

Buying a 700 dollar phone is completely ridicules.I would rather have quality then quantity.Sure my phone may be outdated with in the year but. Still works

I agree with Replicators statement.Windows phones are to resource intensive.Completely unnecessary for a phone.

At least with an android phone,if it breaks you can go out and buy a new decent one for less then 100 dollars at your local Walmart store.
