    Rant on

    Voting:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Windows_OneCare_Live_d4868.html

as 1 stars. Would LOVE to hear why it is a 1 star program. If you voted it 1 star, allow me to slap you like a red headed stepchild for voting something low because its from Microsoft, just like you might vote anything from AOL a 1 because its AOL. Case in point, AOL browser, while not something I use, is based off of Firefox and pretty damn cool, probably not a 5, but certainly not a 1. Should have never allowed ratings at all.

I have been using it for 24 hours, it needs some work, as a beta, I would rank it about a 3.5-4. But its a great program for the millions who dont take care of, or back up, their PC.

    Prove me wrong.

    Rant off.

If I am computer illiterate should I bother trying this product while its still in Beta?

    (Ahem..not that I am one of those who doesn't back-up his pc..cough..reformatted 4 times since purchase..4months ago...cough.)

I'd at least give it a 2 without trying it, just for the simple fact that MS is trying their damndest to remedy Windows Swiss Cheese, I mean, XP :)

Does the rating system allow people to leave comments, MA?

I'll try it later once I get a Windows machine running.

Favorite #2: This one is tough, the grammar makes completing these sentences into something legible close to impossible....

unsure how to activate,i am better at building computers than operating whats a forum jump?

    I reply
    "Hi,
You should have received an email to activate, if you used your valid email address."

think you are taking the p*** as i have entered correct details dont bother to reply as i am no longer interested, you and people like seem to think everybody is born computer literate they are not.

Im getting really annoyed, he deserved a response.

Welp, you got me, even if your not computer literate, what the hell is this supposed to mean:

"unsure how to activate,i am better at building computers than operating whats a forum jump?"

I mean, so I am computer literate, so this means I have to figure out horrible grammar and punctuation and figure out what exactly it is your asking?

Finally, I attempted to help you, but in your own world, there is some problem that simply isnt your fault, so I guess it MUST be ours. If you want help, try telling me what you need, thats why we are here, but at least give me the courtesy of making it understandable. I try and help you and you re-respond with more crap I cant understand.

If I can help, I GLADLY will, but dont blame me for your grammar as an excuse.

Nice, if he writes back, I will offer it for a Xmas present. And I will send it if he gives me his address.

I downloaded it, it is not really all that different than a firewall (except for the back-up feature). At least as forum jump and build re I think.:D

Doesn't conflict with ZA(so far) either which is really nice.

Hahahha, you made a funny :) I must disagree, though. It has an improved drive cleaner, and anti-virus built in. The improved drive cleaner was needed and anti-virus is a big thing. It should not conflict with ZA, assuming you have Windows Firewall off. I used to use ZA, but I use my router as a firewall now and leave Windows on for kicks.

People are not understanding its purpose. It is intended to take care of the computer for those less savvy then us. Drive clean, defrag, anti-virus, back-up all with automation as well. Add in AntiSpyware in Vista and it should add huge protection for the massive, MASSIVE amount of people opening email attachments and infecting the rest of us.

MA you handled it better than I would, I would lose my temper and....probably can't say that here.... hehe.

Seems an alright little piece of software. Remember, you get dickheads in this world, it's not a perfect place...

Oh, I would not call it the best, but people dont take into account what its designed for and that it is in beta. I love it for what it does, depending on the final price. The antivirus market, inparticular, is pretty overcrowded, so to have their product hold up to AVG, Avast, Norton, Mcafee, Trend, or at least people perceptions of these programs, is no easy feat. Maybe thats why there are so many negatives. Got me.

  16. mcadam

Meh, just politely tell those that give negative things without good reason to politely go away.

I beta tested Windows OneCare Live Beta1 and would give it a 3. I did run into some system stability issues after it updated a couple of times; but overall Microsoft is on the right track with this program, and by release should be a very good product.

This is the worst thing about the highspeed broadband age, they have made it too easy and cheap for every smart cookie to get onto the internet, then predictably they follow the flock like sheep and hate both Intel and Microsoft with avengence... why WHO KNOWS, a need to conform with the rest of the flock!! and never listen to reason as they know best.... until,

The Windows OS they have from a company they hate crashes and need help to fix, they curse and swear its all Bill Gates fault... they could try Linux as they hate MS so much but they cannot work linux out as it would be too much hassle to try.

They get a virus or spyware and again blame Bill Gates, Microsoft and everyone else, weird somehow I dont think it was Billy Gates el al that was clicking through the warez, porn sites and downloading illegal mp3s off p2p!! then when asked do you have an AntiVirus, AntiSpyware and Firewall they go HUH or Yes but its not upto date.... herein lies the problem

Its better to blame someone else, rather than take ownership of your own failings.

and as MA said below, at least Microsoft have decided to take a duty of care to its users and produce some nice programs to help combat virii/spyware and do basic maintanence jobs all in one package, for new and less savvy users of PCs this must be welcomed as a big step forward ( ok savvy users will still use their favorite 4-5 apps ( including me ) to do the same but so what ) if this one app can cut the number of virii that spred over the net because of poor or non-existant security then GREAT :)

IF you dont try it then dont knock it just because its from microsoft, I have not tried OneCare live but have tried its sibling Safety Live out and its a good step forward imo, may not be for everyone, especially confident PC users but OneCare will be superb for new and less confident users ;)

If we also while I'm in typomode, think back to when MS Antispyware came out, the same comments came out OH NO MS have bought Giant and all darkness decended on the internet world as if it was the devil rising... guess what, now, MS Antispyware is one of the better apps emerging and getting some superb reviews, even still in its beta phase!

As for that Email MA recieved, dont think I'd want them building a PC for me I'm afraid :)

Between MG and a couple other places where I moderate it never ceases to amaze me when I see correspondence like this and/or the unfounded comments from people who obviously have no clue what a 'beta' is. Or even better, the ones who sign up to beta test, agree to the terms and rather than actually reporting bugs so they can be fixed and further the development of the program, they uninstall it and go all over the net b*tching about how bad it is.

I have been in on the beta testing of OneCare from the beginning. The individuals spearheading this project have been phenomenal not only in implementing requested features with their prompt, courteous responses to bug reports but in their detailed communications for steps to follow in order to gather additional info to submit...even a total newbie could follow the steps.

I did for a time uninstall OneCare b/c I was having to disable the firewall so frequently due to a bug that wouldn't allow me to perform certain tasks such as in the admin panel here at MG or in the secure area of the graphics group I moderate in. I recently received email notification that the bug was purportedly fixed and would I re-test it to see. Sure enough, all is fixed and I'm a happy camper.:) I really like that all-in-one features of OneCare and it's ease of use. It updates frequently, has on access scanning via the right click menu, does a great job of keeping my HD cleaned up, prompts me for permission when a new program is trying to access the net, easily allows me to 'change my mind' if I decide later I don't want the program to access the net and alerts me that it's time to do a back up if I have forgotten (which is often the case:rolleyes::eek::D) I have not had any stability issues at all.

Conclusion: I not only commend MS for their ongoing attempts to help users keep their puters running smoothly and free of malicious, invasive programs but their tireless efforts to resolve issues and/or implement the type of features the majority of computer user would like to see. I give OneCare a 4.5 for it's current features and those that are slated to be implemented.:)

Speaking of beta testing, has anyone else tried the beta version of yahoo mail? I think I like it, but I don't like the big advertisement banner down the right hand side, when you access the inbox, that takes up 25% of my screen. Anyone know if you can hide/remove this? Haven't got a reply back to my feedback to Yahoo yet...

  23. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

Wouldnt imagine you can Lev as that is how they will pay for the bandwidth and maintanence of running a free email service.

I'm testing the newer Hotmail service Windows Live Mail and that has same advertising banner down right side and top... at least they are MS adverts on the beta but I will hazard a guess when it goes live they will be from 3rd part advertisers a-la Gmail.

  24. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Yeah, I kinda knew that but hoped someone had found some way around it. The really sad thing? There is no freakin' advert in the space...it's just blank and taking up 25% of my screen, so you have to use the side scroll bar to read the width of the e-mail text. Frustrating!

Yeah, but your ignorant too ;) Dunno, its all good here, runs perfectly, no issues, no problems really, especially for a beta.

Hey Lev, Sometimes if you drop your screen resolution down a bit it will make the ad banners down the side smaller but it makes the rest of page larger, just a trade off.

  28. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Yeah I thought about that, but as this is a beta version I'm not going to mess my settings up until they bring out the final version and see how that sits :) Thanks for the suggestion though.

I was going to make a wisecrack about Kodo being the user who did not like this prog....

I will intstall it on my wife's box and let you know what it does. I see a date from 2001 on the dl page- is this the latest beta available?

I think you can ignore the newbies and leave the ratings. There are some who only look for ratings anyway. You always provoke a great laugh with threads like this. I have been on vacation for week and needed a chuckle.

Another occasion to say thanks for all the hard work you have done to make this the greatest site on the net. I am not saying that off the cuff. I am amazed at other sites that refer back here for downloads!

I have a question ... I've decided to ask my ? here simply because of the thread title "Gotta love ignorant people" I'm sure most of you will be shaking your  heads in disbelief once you have read my ? Some of you may release a small chuckle or little :) smile ... 1 or 2 of you may even end up rolling around on the floor because you are laughing so hard. And yet I am stilll going to ask ... But 1st just for fun my favorite sig is a quote from Abraham Lincoln - "It is better to remain silent and thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."

I'll bet some of you are now having doubts as to whether I will ever actually ask my question (and remove all doubt!)

To answer the few tha fall into the last group, yes I am removing all doubt ...
and the $64,000 dollar ? is - What is a widget? (in reference to the desktop
    )

SugarBritchs from Maxwells linkage above you need to be looking under Graphical component in computing

Konfabulator and Samurize are two of the more widely known widget/gadget apps available, they just allow you to add small toys to your desktop screen, be that weather, news reports to a clock, to-do list etc.

both available from here @ Majorgeeks
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4513
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Samurize_d2162.html

Microsoft have also decided to enter this but in a slightly different way, with a say home page which can be taylored to your own layout and with your favortite widgets/gadgets, this is a good easy way to play with toys of this ilk, rather than install a software app like Konfabulator, if you like the MS one then you could then progress to Konfabulator!?

http://www.live.com/ Microsoft Live webpage ( if you have a Passport account use that as it will save all your settings... if you have an MSN account its the same user/pass ) and some gadgets to play with on that page http://microsoftgadgets.com/gallery/

my basic page, with Email, fav News etc, you can pick the topics up and move them around to your own liking as well as change how many columns their are....

No one here shakes their head at anyone, were here to help you in any way. You would be ignorant if you asked us what a widget was, then procedded to tell us we were wrong, or that widgets are evil and we trashed your computer :) See what I mean? :)
