GPIDrv not working on startup

I assume from the name that this is a driver so I thought I'd post here.

Everytime I turn on my PC I get an error message saying that GPIDrv has failed to run. Does anyone know what this could relate to? I'll re-install the hard/software if I can find out where the problem lies.

New build PC (so a lot has gone on in the last week...)

    Running XP MCE

    Asus A8N-E
    Athlon 64 3700+
(Gigabyte) ATI X800 XL 256 meg
    Terratec 2400i TV Tuner
    Netgear WiFi Adapter

My guess is that the problem started when I installed the TV card and/or tuned in the channels on MCE. I've also been playing around a little with the Mobo extra's so suppose it could relate to Cool n Quiet or somehting like that.

    Any suggestions?

Is their any more info with that error message or is that all it says "GPIDrv has failed to run"?

Check the Event Viewer for any clues to which app is causing this, you could also do a search for the offending file, who's properties may give a clue to what company or app this belongs too.

It may just be an update thats needed.

Yeah. I'm afraid that is all that it tells you.

I did a file search for a file called GPIDrv and had zero files found, which, now that I am writing it down could explain a lot...

Is the event viewer in Control Panel -> Admin Tools ? It's not something I'm familiar with but I assume that I should expect to be able to see the filename in there somewhere. I'll be back if I need any help figureing out what it says.

    Thanks Halo, your a star.

Do you have an ISA card in your pooter? Something like a soundcard etc.

    Yup.

    PCI slots contain -

    Creative Audigy 2 ZS
Netgear WIFi card (the 128mbps version)

Thought I should let you know where all the hardware is just in case so here's the rest -

PCI-e x16 contains the Video card (X800 XL) mentioned in the first post
PCI-e x1 contains the TV card

Could it be my Vid Card? I've been updating drivers etc recently and last night the problem dissapeared. Turned on the PC this morning for music, downloaded an autoupdate from Gigabyte and when I restarted to compete the install it was back.

Which part of Event Viewer should I look in? I had a (too brief) look when I could last night but had no luck finding anything that looked relevant.

Look in either System or Application logs around the time of the error message at boot.

I had a quick search for that file but only came up with a TV software company http://www.bcc.se/ dunno wether you have any of their software installed being your using MCE and no doubt have a guide system?

Same company I got when I googled the filename.

I'm not aware of any of their software being on my computer but I don't have a clue who supplied the drivers to my TV card or whether Microsoft outsourced the MCE online TV guide. Could well be the link. TV guide seems to be fine though (although I haven't had it long enough to know if it is updating properly).

My other suspicion is that it's related to one of the Gigabyte Vid card tools. I sometimes have a blue G symbol in my system tray which relates to the vid card, I have noticed that it was there last time I booted without this error message and wasn't last time I booted (when I did get the error).

Thanks for the info on Event Viewer. I'll post back when I've had a look at that and if I can work out if the Gigabyte software is a coincidence or not.

For the benefit of any future readers it seems to have been an MCE Edition problem.

I am now using Video card drivers off the ATI website that are specifically aimed at MCE and the problem has dissapeared.

Appreciate the help Halo & Steeev

    Cheers for the resolution Orbital57.

Which drivers for the GFX card were you using originally, MS original ones or ones from Gigabyte?

IIRC they were the ones off the CD. I'm afraid that I don't remember which version number.

Drivers I'm using now are the MCE specific drivers (version 6.2) off the ATI website. Gigabyte interestingly only list drivers up to version 5.5 and don't mention MCE on their list of supported O/S.

Since it all seems to be working fine, I'm not going to worry...
