Gps Device Recommendation- Need To Get Rid Of Garmin Nuvi 40

I currently have a Garmin Nuvi 40 that is 3-4 years old. This device works okay (but not great) in urban areas and sucks in rural areas. Sometimes provides wrong directions in the city and in rural areas even shows the car driving in the middle of open fields! I am at the point where I cannot rely on the device.

I want to purchase a new GPS device that I can use in the car. I would appreciate recommendations. Please include your reasons why you like the device and whether the device works well in both urban and rural areas.

Have you updated your maps? It looks like your does not come with free updates but for a one-time fee, you can get 4 updates per year for the life of your device. I suspect that is what you really need, rather than a whole new GPS.

 

I have updated the maps. My Garmin has the latest maps. It still sometimes screws up. I think the problem is the algorithm.

 

Then you might try resetting it. I am just not sure a different device will show something different. Neither the built in GPS in my car (not via Garmin), my old Garmin 660, nor my newer Nuvi 2555LMT with the most recent maps know where I live and my house is 50 years old in the downtown area of the 3rd largest city in Nebraska. The closest any will take me 1/2 block away.

If yours is inconsistent, then it for sure has a problem. That is, if it sometimes show Applebees is here, then the next time there, that is a problem. But if it is consistent in showing Applebees is out in the middle of a field, you may just need to wait until the next Google Maps car comes through your area and remaps the area to show there are now roads and restaurants in what used be the middle of a field.

If you really just want a new one, I sure would verify the return policy of the store before buying.
