Hi guys, I decided to dismount and clean my GPU and fan since I saw the temperature was at 79C without any intensive applications running, I cleaned about 4 years worth of dust from there and plugged it back, now it was at around 44C and working fine. I decided to reinstall the AMD Catalyst software because I didnt have the AMD overdrive options present before for some reason, it crashed during the install, then installed fine after a reboot but suddenly the fan started making a lot of noise, the temperature is still pretty low at 47C tho. The weird part is there was no sound before when it was all clogged up with dust, did I mess something up ? It seems to come and go now without any relation to programs running or anything...
I have tried reinstalling the Catalyst software and disabling the AMD Overdrive options but no change.

    GPU: Radeon HD 4850
    MB: GA-MA78GM-S2H AMD 780G
    OS: Win7 64b

    Thank you.

  2. Probably fluke that it happened after update. Most likely you may have removed the lubricant or blown in more dust into the shaft area. Try to shoot more air under propeller to dislodge what's in there, or perhaps try a drop or two of oil (not wd-40) if accessible and if you're comfortable doing so.

I went back and cleaned out all the dust more thoroughly and it seems to have helped, still a bit loud but manageable now, Im scared to mess around with oil and removing the sink so Ill let it be for now, thanks.

    JhonnyB,
Many of the fans used are bushings rather than bearings and have a nasty habit of wearing out. Once they do and you clean the dust out, the bushings rattle creating a noisy fan.
As long as it is noisy, you can (sort of) live with it; but, if it ever gets quiet, know that the fan is not spinning anymore!
If you could post the make and model of the video card, I'll try to find a new fan which can, almost always, be replaced without taking off the heatsink.
