Graphic breakdown

I was sitting around casually gaming when from nowhere green lines occur on my screen, my screen lock and I'm unable to TAB out or do anything. As I try to reboot my it starts "restarting" right after the windows loading screen, still with green horizontal lines across my screen.

I try to enter safemode, still the green lines and even prompt-text are being smudged into nothingness. Eventually it comes into safemode, this time with red lines acros the entire screen. I've tried retoring my system, also checking for overheating around the hardware in the chassi but didn't find any dust or even mediocre heat inside.

Last change/update I've had is that now after trying to load windows normally the screen just goes inactive/black as if nothing is going on but my computer doesn't seem to be shut down.

I'm at a loss, never encountered this issue before. I've tried altering my screens settings but nothing happened. My first guess would be that my videocard or screen went to hell for no good reason. Anyone encountered this before?

make sure the graphics card is properly seated in the slot also re-plug lead between monitor and card.
can you try the monitor on another machine and what card is it?

Yeah, I'm bringing home a laptop to double check my monitor with. I will check the cords and the cards positioning even though I am not sure how it would have finally popped out of order after two years without any real turmoil. I'll be back with more information later I guess!

The card is a Nvidia 7100 LE if I don't remember entirely incorrent.. It's a Nvidia LE atleast, I might have been off on the numbers abit.

Made a couple of new tries but no change. The big thing that irks me is that it is able to go into safemode, with red lines across the screen, but with a regular login the screen simple inactivates after some screens of green squares. If it was simply the screen would it actually behave like that? It feels like a shut down of the screen at a specific moment every time sounds more like a videocard problem, which I dread.. Bah..

Definitely sounds like the video card is on it's way to the big hardware graveyard in the sky. I'd do as suggested though and check the seating etc. maybe see if you can get a temperature monitor program to check temps as well. Could be the heat sink not making good contact or the fan not running also so check that.

Edit: maybe try uninstalling the drivers too. See if it boots then. Long shot that it's a driver issue though I think.

I tried uninstalling the drivers and ended up being able to log into windows with the same red lines as in safemode. I've pretty much excluded the screen, the testscreen comes up clear enough now when I unplug it from the computer.

The only thing I can come up with is that it is the graphic card? I'll probably look into replacing the card, it sounds simple enough though I have no idea what went wrong with it?

OK, I just wanted to confirm for anyone that might get this issue in the future that it is definately a GFX-card issue.

I bought a budget ATI Radeon 4650, dirt cheap, just put it in and everything cleared up and all the issues vanished.
