Hi everyone hope you can help with this prob it is driving me nuts.I have a asrock p4vm8 motherboard with onboard graphics unichrome pro.I recently bought a geforce fx 5200 card as i hated the onboard graphics. The motherboard home page states the mobo will detect the graphics card and no changes had to be made in the bios, however i did alter some detail just in case also there is no option to turn off the onboard graphics in the bios.I deleted the drivers for the unichrome and fitted the geforce card.On reboot the geforce is listed in the text displayed as the comp is booting up,then i found it strange the hardware wizard did not kick in to tell me it had detected new hardware, anyway i ran the driver disc and got nvidia setup program could not detect any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware.I have tried downloading new drivers from the nvidia site and the card makers inno3d.Finally in device manager display adapter is no longer showing.I am running xp pro edition.I have checked and the mobo is compatible with the card and my usual comp expert is at a loss as to the problem so i turn to you for help.Sorry my first post is so longrolleyes

I have used the same setup, at some time, and no problems with the FX5200.
Normally, we go to my computer, devices, and UNINSTALL the driver to the hard ware, then shut down, fit card, and start up.
I suggest that you shut down, remove the fx5200, and restart!
Windows should then find your onboard graphics. Let it run for a while, then go to start, My Computer, Devices, and display adaptors, and driver, UNINSTALL DRIVER ONLY, CLICK O.K.
Then shut down, and insert your card, and restart. Then install nvidia driver.

Hi baklogic when i go into my computer there is nothing listed as devices.I have already removed the driver for the unichrome in the add/remove section. When i check dxdiag it states it is running with generic drivers which i believe is what xp uses as a basic driver. And as i mentioned there is no display adapter listed in device manager even when the fx card is removed which i find odd

It looks like Windows files have gone adrift.

You could run CHKDSK /R, first , to see if this will fix

Or, Go to start, run, and type in sfc /scannow, and put your Windows cd in the cd/dvdrom drive, and keep clicking retrty. It can take an hour.

Re-reading your post, I would try your motherboard disc, and reinstall the vga driver, before going further - I seem to remember 4 in 1 drivers for that, but I will come back, shortly.

Have you got pci, or agp enabled in the bios ? should be pci (default), Agp voltage should be set to high. Agp mode to auto.
To get into bios, press F2 during startup.
Have your gone into bios, and loaded failsafe defaults, press f10, save and exit.?

    Studiot's leading a similar direction.

    Power up,
    into BIOS,
set everything back to default -> *EVERYTHING*
Install the CD that came with the graphics card
    Reboot
    Install the hardware
    Reboot
    Play games :)

Thanks for all your reply's,i tried Dublin PC Services first i went into bios and set everything to default, when i tried to load the drivers with the disc i got the usual message setup could not detect any drivers that are compatible with current hardware.Should i insert the card after i reset bios and not before i install the hardware.Studiot i do not get shadowing video rom to ram in the bios i made a note of the settings once i reset everything. As follows AGP Voltage(Auto) Primary Graphics Adapter(PCI) AGP Aperture Size(64mb) AGP Mode(Auto) AGP Fast Write(Disabled) AGP 3.0 Calibration (Auto) AGP 3.0 Drive Strength(Auto) AGP Staggered Delay(Auto) AGP GADSTB Output Delay(Auto) Onboard AGP Share Memory(Auto) V-Link Speed#(Normal) PCI Delay(Disabled) IDE Drive Strength (Normal).Last week i loaded the VIA Hyperion Pro program which is a update for my mobo,And last month i ran windows xp pro disc as when i bought a new printer and installed it it told me it could not find certain files. The xp disc ran fine and i have had no problems.I will try the other options as listed. Thanks

I would leave the new graphics card out, until later.
1/ Load faisafe defaults, press f10, ,then y, and enter.
When the computer starts up, it will allocate a Windows driver for your onboard vga.
    Check that it has.
Load your motherboard cd, and I seem to remember with that motherboard, that if a driver is installed it will show up greyed out, if not it will need ticking.- Now , remove cd, shutdown and restart. Then shut down. Then insert card, restart, and when Windows finds it click have disk, and insert the cd for the graphics card.
You may well have to restart again for driver to be correctly installed., and then you should be up and running with new card working.

The dark clouds have parted and the sun shines down on my computer.Baklogic i have to admit i did not think your idea would work as like i said i had downloaded the 4in1 driver a while back and i still has problems, however i reinstalled the mobo driver i got with the comp it seemed as if nothing happened but when i re started the comp hardware wizard came straight on finding the fx card.I have checked in dxdiag and the card is listed in there all working fine.A big thank you to all who helped with my problem on here you are top people indeed. One last question regarding the card drivers,do you recommend installing up to date drivers or is it a case of if it ain't broke don't fix it.Once again thank you:celebrate

I would enjoy for a little while, but then it can be benificial to update your graphics driver, as the cd one is usually well out of date.

OK,is there a way to check what version of driver you have so you can compare it against the latest driver number
