Hey guys, i cannot use the stand-by function of my Windows XP SP2 since the graphics card driver is not letting me for some reason. Whenever i click Stand-by from the start menu, it starts to go as if it is going to go into stand-by, but it never does, it comes back to the normal screen with the error message "System Standby Failed" as the title and the message "The device driver for the 'S3 Savage2000' device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please colse all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver." I tried closing all applications and i also tried it in safe mode, but still didn't work. I either need the latest driver for my graphics card, or i need to change some sort of setting to make it work properly. I hope that somebody will help me solve this problem. If anybody needs any info about anything, then just let me know and i will be glad to give it. I have uploaded the specs file i got from HWINFO32, which i hope will help u. Cheers.

I would recommend not using Stand By and just shutting down. Using Stand By and leaving the PC essentially running powered up is not a real good idea. You leave yourself wide open to power surges and power spikes that can burn out your PSU, MB, RAM, CPU, etc... I've seen more than one dead PC taken out by a power surge. Power strip type 'surge protectors' don't help much. If you MUST use stand by, go the video manufacturers web site and get the latest driver, and use a UPS unit for your power needs. They do a good job of filtering line noise and spikes and provide clean voltage to the PC. And if the power goes out, your PC on Stand By just got shut off; with a UPS you get a minimum of 10min to shut down and save your work.... Again: Stand By is not recommended.....

PS- Stand By also puts unnecessary mileage on your components. Yes, there are more or less shut off, but still 'active'...

The only con of using standby that I know of is since the apps left open in standby mode are stored in memory that is powered by the small amount of power used in this mode, then a power surge or loss of power will make any changes go unsaved.

If the video card is preventing you from going into Standby, maybe what you need is an updated driver.
Or you could try Hibernate mode, if it suits you.

NOTE:Hibernation mode saves more energy ;)

No, the only hardware active in Standby are the cpu and memory.

Bladesofhalo the company making my graphics card stopped making newer drivers 4 some reason. I need to get the latest graphics card driver. If you have a look at my specs log, somwehere in it, it should tell u exactly wat my graphics card is. I also would like to use hibernatio, but i have a problem with it. Whenever i go into hibernation, my internet connection (dial-up) gets disconnected. So i cannot leave the computer in hibernation. If there is a way to make the internet connection on while the comp is in hibernation, plz tell me. Anyways, i need somebody to get me the latest drivers for my graphics card, which is S3 Savage 2000 (i think). Cheers.
