Graphics card not being detected?

So I started out with an old Gateway that had onboard graphics and a pretty poor PSU, then decided I wanted to upgrade things a bit. Bought an nvidia 9800 GT and a new PSU. But for the life of me I cannot seem to get the card to be detected. The fan powers on, but nothing displays. I'm using an HDTV that I have connected via HDMI cable and HDMI to DVI adapter, then to the card. That should work as far as I know. Any advice?

What do you get when you boot? If you boot up with the card in, and plug your monitor into the onboard, what happens?

Also make sure you have all the power cables plugged in. Some GPU's have more than one. Also, is your PSU rated for that GPU?

Did you check the BIOS to see if the onboard GPU is disabled?

There is no on board video. It's either plug a card in to the AGP or PCI slot. The BIOS is pretty lame, too. I only have two options. It lets met set the primary video source to AGP or Auto. This option is found in the same place that you would enable/disable onboard sound/nic, etc.

Thanks for the ideas, though. Right now I'm using a PCI card. Maybe I need to get my hands on a AGP?

Just to give you some facts:

It had ad an AGP rage card that came with the computer but that is now toast - it won't even display bios options.

I bought a cheapie ATI rage pci card for $20 just to get the machine kicking. There shouldn't be a problem with power, etc.

    Here's the exact situation:

Turn it on. Goes through POST fine. Dell screen flashes and goes away. (If I press F8 I will get the startup options screen here) It looks like it's about to start the windows logo, but it just stops. My monitor still displays a green light as if it is getting a signal. The screen looks black/grey. It's not solid black like when it's off, but nothing happens. I let the sucker stay on all night to see if it would fix itself, but still a grey/black screen in the morning.

It seems like it's just getting stuck, but I really have no idea.

It does this no matter what device I set first in the boot order. It's a bit strange to me.

Try turning off all onboard video options in bios. Plug your regular monitor into the new card just to get it to start up. Load the drivers for the new card when it works. Select the HDTV option from within windows. Turn off the computer, plug in the HDTV cable and restart. That might work.

Thanks to everyone who posted. I somehow got it working by fiddling with that clear CMOS jumper on the board. All of sudden it started displaying. I just hope it doesn't stop working suddenly.
