Is there an easy way to tell if my graphics card (nvidia geforce fx5200 128mb) will support 1440 x 900 resolution? I am considering buying a 19" widescreen (viewsonic va1912wb) and that is it's native resolution. Just curious if there is an easy way to check other than buying it and trying. The website for my card is just plain confusing. Thanks :)

As far as I'm aware, the resolutions supported by a FX5200 chip are,

    640 x 480
    800 x 600
    1024 x 768
    1152 x 864
    1028 x 1024
    1600 x 1200
    1920 x 1440
    2048 x 1536

As far as 1440x900 is concerned, that's probably the maximum and not the native resolution.

Native resolution for a 19" anything is 1280x1024.

Yeah, the monitor is widescreen, not 4:3, so the resolution won't be 1280x1024.

I am reasonably certain that a Geforce FX 5200 should be able to support that resolution. Just don't expect to play any new games with that card. It should have no trouble with the desktop though.

Also, I might add that I bought a 20" widescreen monitor from Dell for $397. It might be a better price than that Viewsonic. Just watch on www.techbargains.com/dellcoupons.cfm Every so often they will have it there for under $500. The lowest I've seen it is about $370. It's not on there right now, but trust me, it's worth the wait. :) P.S. - The resolution on the Dell is 1680x1050.

    I'm confused.

If the monitor is widescreen, then it would be 16:9 I'm assuming?

    Therefore 1440 x 900 can't be 16:9, it would have to be 1440 x 810 to be 16:9?

Thare should be a "add custom resolution" tab whare you can add your own resolution ...ATI cards can do it to but its not supported in the driver ( you half to use a 3rd party program ) I ran 1200x900 ( the vary max my screen will run at 75HZ ) all the time on my 5600....

Thanks Ace. I found the custom resolution area, so I should be all set to go. I ordered this monitor and it should be here today. I will post later how it looks/works.

Insomniac, it is a 16:10 widescreen... now your soul can rest. :)

Yeah, most Widescreen TVs and Monitors are a 16:10 aspect ratio rather than 16:9. That way they can conform to 16:10 movies without black lines on the side. 16:9 still plays with black lines on the top and bottom though.

Widescreen in my part of the world is 16:9 and not 16:10.

Never even heard of 16:10 till now, and I double-checked on Digital BroadCasting Association Australia.

May have something to do with NTSC or PAL, but I'm having a wild guess.

16:9 here, with option to stretch, but it doesnt become 16:10 as sides are cut. Most movies that you see have the "the movie has been modified from its original content" That just means sides have been cut off to fit 4:3 aspect ratio. Orignal content (basically anything thats filmed) is filmed in "letter box" video mode, more info here.

:D I was wondering what the hell Law and Order images had to do with this?

Anyway, that link doesn't mention 16:10, and I still can't see any advantage.

Maybe it's fanciful to expect the world to agree on one standard?

Well I got the VA1912wb (19" widescreen) monitor and WHOA! I cant believe i'm playing the same game. The improvement over my Dell 19" CRT (that broke after 1 year.... grrrrr...) is phenom! Maybe its the digital cable... whatever it is... WOW! Highly recommend this monitor based on color, brightness, contrast and WIDESCREEN oooogle! Had no probs setting it up... plug n' play + adjust my graphics card resolution and up and running in a few mins. Thanks for the help gang.
